CS 5.5 pre-purchase thoughts

I am strongly considering purchasing the Adobe CS 5.5 Master Collection Suite. I know it has been out for a while and I'm wondering if a newer version is on the near horizon. It would be frustrating to buy now and find out CS 6 is announced next week.

I am not in immediate need of the software but I'd like to have it soon so I can (re)learn some basics. I had a bootleg copy of After Effects 4 years ago and went through several lessons in the Adobe Classroom in a Book for AE. I'm hoping to make myself more valuable to clients by learning more aspects of media production which is why I'm considering the Master Collection.

So, if a newer version isn't expected to be out for another... say six weeks, then I'd likely buy sooner than later. Otherwise, I might hold out.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and input.

I haven't heard anything, but there's no time like the present. 5.5 isn't a world of difference from 4, but it's definitely worth it to me (except for some reason PS is a render HOG now). CS6 speculation is kinda like the 5DMkIII speculation. You know it's coming, but "when?" I say just jump into it, and when 6 comes out you'll already have that head start and you can just upgrade for the small price. Speaking of which, I believe you have to have the previous version to upgrade now. You can't jump versions anymore.

Heh heh... Too true. Just ordered some audio gear from them yesterday. Didn't realize they were closed today.

They are closed Friday afternoon until Saturday evening. I believe they close for religious reasons. I took a trip to New York and one of the main things I wanted to do was go and visit the store and check it out. And you guessed it, it was Saturday. I have CS5 and for me, it seems like it does everything I could ever want. It's getting to the point where there will have to be some serious reason for me to upgrade anytime in the next few years.

Yeah, B&H is run by Jews, their Sunday is our Saturday and it starts at Friday when the sun goes down.
Saturday used to be the christian Sunday too, but Constantine the Great changed that to Sunday after gaining victory in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (312).

Yeah, I've spent tens of thousands of dollars with them over the years. Still, I can't seem to keep up with their schedule. I mean, it was only 12:20pm (CST) when I called them yesterday. No big deal. I'll just order Monday, IF they're open. :)

Thanks for the input, Kit.

Just bought it. Hope it's legit and that I don't regret it.

If it is as advertised, then Ill be happy B&H was closed when I called. :)

Could be very legit. Adobe had a Half off deal for about three months a couple months back because of FCX. They were giving everyone 50% off if they switched over, making the bundle $850 or something. They probably bought a couple, waited, and now are reselling it. Good deal for both parties, really.

Hmhm..

I am just doing post on Ae CS 5.5 for my latest music-video, and I am swearing it is last one on that.. I have something like 260 clips in 4 minutes.. rotobrush - sometimes works, sometimes don't.. and neatvideo crashes damn thing several times ( then I got to go over the whole project and clean out all neatvideo filters ).. Editing in Premiere CS5.5 was OK ( FS100 and GH13 files ).. But AE is a nightmare..

Thinking of davinci Resolve for post ( I am doing mostly CC, greenscreen, and some tracking )..but you don't have denoiser in the lite version :(( ..and if you want better performance, you need killer hardware..

Oh yes, I am on i7 PC..but only 6 GB RAM..

I switched from FCP 4 months ago and my life is sooooo much better. That said, I am going to start using Avid on some projects.

The difference between CS4 and CS5 was quite large, but the difference between CS5 and CS5.5 is pretty small. I suspect the difference between 5.5 and 6.0 will be small as well.

Either way, 5.5 rocks...

You may not need Master Collection..Check out Production Premium instead for $900 less.

Also, when the Apple FCP feces hit the proverbial fan a few months ago Adobe was offering Production Premium for $900 -- ridiculously low. If you pull some strings or send them an email you may get lucky.

You can download it as well and try it for 30 days free.

Update:

The software arrived today. Like mentioned in their ad, it doesn't come in the big box or with manuals; just a smaller box with the software discs. I installed the software, entered the serial number, received a confirmation e-mail from Adobe and checked to see that each app would open, etc.

Bottom line: It's legit.

Now I gotta get my learnin' on.

Awesome Terry! Glad it turned out good for you. It's a great suite, one I couldn't live without.

I use Adobe Premiere 5.0 and 5.5, as well as After EFfects 5.0 and 5.5 at work (multiple workstations).

I can definitely say that I notice a speed improvement with Premiere 5.5, and cuda rendering seems to be faster between the two versions. Not by much, maybe 10% which is still significant.

5.5 does especially well with RED footage.

Best of all Terry, you can upgrade to CS6 which will include the very capable coloring program Speedgrade (I'm pretty sure it will be in CS6).
