Panasonic has released updated firmware for the HPX170 series (including 171, 172, 173, and 174). The new firmware is version 1.06-00-0.00. This firmware update was released on February 16, 2009.

The release notes say that the purpose of this firmware update is:
Camera recorder might not be powered on rarely when power SW is turned on soon after AC adaptor (or battery pack) is connected. This problem has been solved.

You can download the firmware update from their support page here:

I tried the firmware update, but it's not working on my HVX170, using a 128mg SD card. I formatted the card in the cam, then loaded the update folder (PRIVATE) onto the SD card (via my Mac). But when I insert the SD card back in the cam in MCR mode and navigate through the menu, there is no UPDATE option on the OPERATION > FORMAT menu. Anyone else encounter this problem?

The 1.6 update has to be downloaded via OS 10.4 or earlier, or there's a supplementary form to fill out if you don't have access to pre 10.5. The info for this is at the bottom of the P2 driver software/software usage page. see above and below the "I don't accept, I do Accept buttons for warning/info

In reading through the install pdf, the file cannot be unzipped in a Mac using Leopard, Mac OS X.

That is indeed interesting given that the latest releases of FCP require 10.5.x or later.

And that Leopard was released sixteen months ago.

This is pretty much unfortunate.

Supplement:

1. If the software is unzipped on MacOS X 10.5 or later and copied to SD Memory Card, with this SD Memory Card “UPDATE” on the OPERATION menu may not be displayed so that software update is not possible.

2. If MacOS X 10.5 or later is ONLY available, special arranged driver software is necessary. Please fill-in necessary information on the “Inquiry form” and mail to us. Please excuse us if we can not answer immediately.

Not the best customer service in a $5K + cam for Mac users.

I bought my camera in December and it tells me it is already running version 1.06-00-0.00. To be sure, I used P2 Status Logger and it also told me my camera is up to date.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that I would already have an update that was just released, or should I just be happy and not worry about it?!

I tried the update, even called panasonic operations in NJ and I had to send them the link, cause even they didn't know about the update.. and then after all that, they said they'll call me back.. pfff. still waiting..

UPDATE DIDN'T WORK FOR ME. So asinine to have not work with the latest MAC OSX operating system, what is Pany's problem with MAC, from Day 1 there's always been some stupid catch, like with the P2 Store like hitting a bunch of buttons to turn the light from orange to red to make it MAC compatible (which wasn't even in the instruction manuel) MAC users don't forget, thank god that the makers of RED loves Mac. sorry to hurt all you PC users feelings, nothing personal.

I downloaded, unzipped and installed the firmware update with no problem whatsoever. I shot my friend's wedding the next day, then a monologue the following day. All is well.

Oh, and I'm a PC. :)

Don't worry, be happy.
