Cross your fingers !

One can only hope, but don't hold your breath! As things stand I'm undecided whether to go to a DSMC at all, or stay with my 5D / HVX kit. Manual control could just push me to the 5DII rather than the GH1

I hope it is something. I really gave up on thinking Canon was going to do something really SMART for a change...

Is this something Canon would announce at NAB?

(I've never been to NAB, so I don't know if this is a venue Canon utilizes???)

Vincent Laforet maybe? (He's not really a company but certainly rules one...)

But I will stay cool. All that play with hopeful rumours and subsequent denial has turned already some in manic-depressive freaks. To say the least.

f&ck Canon!

Until a new functional firmware is in owners hands and cameras they are still just being self serving negligent douche nozzles!

I'll believe it when I see it. Up to now the only firmware update to add functionality has been to allow the 5D to use bigger CF cards. Other than that it's been bug-fixes (Eg 1DIII autofocus problems) only. And I doubt if Canon see this as a bug (You can add the "ger").

My feeling is that this is real and it will either release along side the 60d or canons rumored video camera.

"douche nozzles" is funny, but better as "they are still just being self serving negligent douche noodles."

Love the angst! (just stay away from heavy traffic and Rage Against the Machine in the CD player).

I don't think they are going to beef up the 5D anymore. I really HOPE they do. I have one on the way. But I think they gave everyone enough leeway already. I'm sure they knew people would start buying Nikon adapters, and finding all the little tricks to get 'so-so' manual controls.

depends on how greedy they are, and if there will be enough profit from the indi world to warrant it. My feeling is if enough people made enough noise over the last few months about the 24p, then maybe they'll see the cam as a potential to close the gap.

This is key... any firmware update will be solely a business decision and not to appease customer complaints about its limitations. But after seeing their latest offering with 20p, I am less hopeful.

yea I hate to say it but when I saw they were only offering 20p for the smaller camera I was kind of happy : / probably because I just ordered a 5D.

I already am not a big fan of canon HD cameras. the reality is if they made this 5D any easier to use for shooting 1080p I would really hate their video line (or whatever you want to call it).

for now I'll deal with the stupid exposure/audio issues and be happy they let this one slide. it seems they underestimated the power of this thing.

I gather the 20 fps limit in the 500D is down to a smaller buffer, 2 channel rather than 4 channel readout of the sensor and a less powerful version of the Digic IV chip. They didn't deliberately cripple it, just a cock-up over processing power, and what they thought was needed in a low-end camera.
I still don't think we'll get manual control and / or 24 fps (As PAL I'd rather have 25 fps) via firmware, I have a sneaking suspicion it may also be a hardware thing as well. That is assuming Canon think we need it in the first place.
The thing to remember, is it's much more likely to be cock-up rather than conspiracy, yes boring and not as much fun as paranoid conspiracy theories, bit reality is boring, sorry an' all.

So then, the question is ... should I purchase the 5DII or the GH-1?

So, so, soooo confusing. I desperately want to jump in. I've got the money and all. And I already have some investment in Canon lenses. I just don't want them to come out with the 5DIII-all-manual-control a month AFTER I purchase the 5DII.

Maybe I'll just keep using my dad's Canon Super 8? :) It's still going after nearly 30+ years!!!

Look, even if Canon pops up with Manual Controls (hint hint hint) you still must consider a few factoids:

1. GH-1 = Less Money. For the price of one MKII You can get TWO GH-1's with Kit Lenses and do double coverage. That's awesome to me.

2. GH-1 still has flip out screen. This is going to make it worlds easier for almost any shooting scenario.

3. MKii is probably going to beat the pants off of the GH-1 in image clarity and lowlight shooting. I just can't see any other VDSLR getting there til they've got Full Frame.

4. MKii has full frame FOV. You don't have to worry about lenses, honestly. That's a major plus for the MKii

5. MKii is locked into 30P. This update is not framerates, trust me. You WILL deal with 30P in post if 30P is not what you want. The GH-1 has 720/60P (Slow mo baybEEEE) and 1080/24P already. Post is in place.

6. if GH-1 has Live HDMI out (unknown) then the ballgame has changed.

If you don't have to shoot anything RIGHT THIS SECOND, you had best just relax and stop thinking about it. Don't purchase EITHER cameras until you absolutely have to do so.

Thanks for the comparisons, Kholi. Very helpful.

It's actually getting down to the wire for me. I'll need one or the other VERY soon. And B&H finally has the 5DII back in stock! But I'm going to try and wait until after NAB.

Kholi: you sound like you are attempting to drop some hints about this firmware? Is this what you've heard as well?
