Crop Test Thread - Random Junk from MKii

Decided to stop derailing the Nikon thread. This one has no real purpose other than trying to figure out how cropping 720 out of the 1080 works out as far as DOF and FOV and all of that good/stupid stuff.

Mainly, I made this thread for random footage and test stills.

Quick Details:

All Handheld
Vivitar 100-300/F5 + Nikon 1.6x Teleconverter = 420mm
Contax Zeiss 180/2.8 @ 2.8
Focused with a 2.5" Ikan LCD + Hoodman Composite out

Those are the only two lenses in this footage. The more saturated stuff is the 180/2.8 zeiss, uncorrected.

All handheld, watch out for the last clip. I just walked with the camera, being silly.

1. MKii @ 5ft from Mandarin Oranges Can. Left side is the full 1080, 50/2.8 and the right side is reframed with a 35/2.8 then 720 cropped.

2. 50/1.4 @ 1.4. Left side 1080 @ 2ft, right side 1080 @ 3ft cropped to 720

MKii50_1_4.JPG

3. 1080 85/1.4 @ 4(ish)Ft and 1080 50/1.4 @ 2(ish)Ft

Doing some more randomness.

Mainly, I made this thread for Squig. He is my friend.

lol

good thing it's not a color balance test, still waiting for a report on your white balance toys.

just got my step rings, now I can finish the anamorphic shootout!

Just manually dialed in. That cat is not white, but off white and the can's label isn't white either.

Hey, thanks for the test, Kholi.
I never really understood how cropping (and effectively sensor size) affected depth of field until now.

For people who don't know much about focal lengths: in addition to depth of field, the length changes how distances can be perceived between background and foreground. Take a look at the sizes of the objects in all of those frames and consider it. That's a more important reason to choose a certain length than most else, especially framing considerations.

another advantage of this method or shooting with a crop sensor is that you won't as easily run out of f-stops if you're shooting a scene with a normal and a tele lens and you want to match the DOF

Which is how the old 'dolly zoom' or 'contra zoom' effect works,

Yup, Squig.

Andrew, no problem.

Cassius, absolutely.

Lee, sweeeeeeeeeet.

Uploading a 720/30p to 1080/24p quick conversion from MPEGStreamClip.

Everything was framed by eye, I had ripped my bootleg guides off of the screen the day before and just didn't bother to put them back up. Probably won't throw them back up unless I get a clear overlay, it was fine judging by eye on the screen for where I would crop out. Aside from the last terrible shot.

Will detail stuff. Oh, and the iKan 2.5" SD monitor is awesome for focusing and composing.

the next magic lantern update will allow you to upload your own guide files, very cool.

on a noga arm with a hood?

maybe the 2.5" and a zacuto z-finder might do me......and maybe kit's LCD if it's good.....then there's the 7" marshall with exposure assist. So hard to decide on monitoring options almost as tough as the MKII decision

I've used that, a 2.5" And a Strap on Viewfinder and it works great.

However, Viewfinders hurt my face from squinting so much. I decided on a Hoodman this time.

Will be getting Kit's HD 5.6" LCD when it drops.

I've been using an 8.9" SD LCD, focusing and framing are cool but it really bugs me that I can't see a clean HD image and I can forget about colors or exposure with it, it's like if I was DJing with fisher price turntables, it's just not very inspiring.

bloom reckons the http://www.sock-loupe.com/ is better than the hoodman.

Wabbit season!

What are your picture settings? any nd's or polarizer? very similar look to your GH1 stuff.

Neutral with everything dialed down + Highlight tone priority.

1/40 shutter, 320 ISO, Polarizer and an ND on the 180/2.8.

W/B by Kelvin setting + Grid or by eye pretty much. Forgot the Expo Disc.

Uploading the 1080/30p now.

Did anyone else happen to notice how horribly composed this post is? I'm going to leave it quoted here to shame myself and, hopefully-after the pain killers wear, I'll look back on this and spank my hands.

I haven't tried highlight tone priority yet but it's the next thing on my to do list after I get all this anamorphic testing done. Dialed down neutral is definitely the way to go but I think the picture controls might need some further tweaking, the blue channel seems a little weak.

What polarizer are you using? I just splurged on a top of the line 77mm Schneider, can't wait to try it and a fader ND, I'm going with your rubber lens hood plan with a 77-82mm fader nd on the front. I might still get a mattebox if I can pick one up cheap for the wank value but only for locked down location shooting.
