Action Sports Filming: 24p or 30p

Hi,

I'm wondering if action sports filmers here prefer to shoot with 720/24p or 720/30p. I assume you'll get a slightly more smooth shot with 30p, but still stay away from the more 'live' look of 60i. I don't want to shoot 60i, but don't necessarily care for something that looks exactly like film.

Also, for the slowest and smoothest slow-mo possible, is 720/24p the best? Could you film everything in 720/30p and film any slow-mo in 720/24p at 60 frames per second without having complications with editing?

Thanks for any input. I'm researching a HVX200 and am trying to learn some stuff before I buy.

60P over 24P gives you 2.5x overcranking, while 60P over 30P gives you 2.0x.

I would argue that the extra 0.5x for those moments where you want to overcrank is not worth the judder that you get from shooting fast motion or panning in 24P.

Another option is (as you mentioned) to mix overcranked 24P and realtime 30P, but this may complicate the workflow, depending on what you use to edit. Edius on the PC will gladly mix and match NTSC, PAL, SD, HD, ITU 601 & 709, framerates, audio formats etc., while other solutions may require some preprocessing to conform the material.

We shoot college sports at 720/24pn.

We shoot slow motion at 720/24P with 60 frame rate.

Looks great.

It all depends on your editing requirements. If the entire sequence can be
24p then shoot 24pN at 60 fps. If you are not sure what you might need,
you can shoot 720 60p and slo-mo shots to 24p or 30p using the Frame
Rate Convertor. We usually shoot with the shutter at 90 degrees in
film cam mode when shooting sports at 60fps.
