crop reference for more than 16x9...

Hello,

I'll start editing a music video soon, and I'd like to simulate a wider format (1.85, 2.33 ???).
Could anyone tell me vertical image size for wider formats ? I guess it should be around 300 pixels or less....

Thanks,
Ulisses

Just divide your horizontal width by the aspect ratio you want.

720/1.85 = 389 thus 720/389 or 389*1.85 = 720 (1.85:1).

likewise,

720/2.33 = 309

That doesn't work though, because it doesn't take into account the non-square aspect ratio of DV pixels.

The proper formula would be to divide 640 by the aspect ratio, because 640 is the width you'd have if you were working with square pixels.

So for 1.85:1, you'd want a frame height of 640/1.85= 346
For 2.35:1, you'd want a frame height of 640/2.35 = 272.

Barry,

In theory, shouldn't you be able to do (WIDTH/RATIO)xPAR?

So, (720/1.85)*.9 ? Of course, that gives you ~350 and not 346.

thanks Barry Sledge....

what are common formats ? 1.85 ? 2.35 ? something in between ?

ulisses,
Those are the most common film formats.

I'll have Screen Skins overlays for the DVX 3 1/2" LCD available soon in 2.35. The 1.85 is available now on request (EVS, Birns & Sawyer and Abel Cine might have to special order them, as I don't make them in the same quantities as the popular 16X9 version).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ken,

Any site / photos from the screen skins ? Can I order direct from you ?

Ulisses

Sledge is correct, if you just add the PAR in there then the formula works for all cases. (Sledge used .9, which delivered 350; I used .9091, which delivers 346, but it's all within spittin' distance of each other!)

Ulisses, common aspect ratios in use today are:
4:3 - most televisions
16:9 - HD, and some SD televisions
1.85:1 - most theatrical movies
2.39:1 - wide/CinemaScope movies
