GH2 crop mode downsides?

But smaller overall sensor size doesn't equal more noise, smaller individual pixels equal more noise. The compacts have more noise because they squeeze 12-14 million tiiiiiiny pixels into that area. The pixels on the GH2 don't get any smaller, you're just using less of them. It shouldn't cause different noise (or anything else except FoV, for that matter) characteristics, just as switching from FF35 to APS mode on a Nikon D3 doesn't.

The answer must be that the GH2 sensor is ALWAYS bad at high ISOs but most of the time this is hidden by downsampling. If this isn't the case, my second guess is it's a software bug that can/needs to be fixed.

i missed your reply.. and i agree with Fotograf.
it's very obvious that the TELE mode simply magnifies the pixels that were smaller before, and now cause more artifacts on more occasions. this cannot be changed.

This may very well be the case. (After all, 16Mpix on a four thirds sensor is quite a lot, equivalent to more than 60 on an FX sensor.) And it would be an assumption that explains why the GH2 delivers higher resolving video, as compared to the 5DII that is simply skipping lines.

But what's wrong with downsampling if it works?

Of course, no downsampling is involved in ETC mode, so in this case you see all the high per pixel noise of a 16Mpix Four Thirds sensor.

No, it's just the other way round. ETC does not magnify anything. It just lacks the noise reduction that happens when 16Mpix are downsampled (or whatever the GH2 does) to 2Mpix.

no, i'm talking about the tele mode which lets you use a native 1080 res of the sensor without downscaling.
it's a new feature, nothing to do with the natural 4/3 crop. that way you can have x5 tele from any lens attaches (300mm = 1500mm)
without losing quality.

however, i wanted to hear some opinions on how well it can actually perform in lowlight vs the "regular" mode..

can you tell what page in the manual refers to this , i only know about the E-T-C and the fact than the GH2 has a 2x crop mode so the kit 14x300mm lens is in fact 28x 280mm.

Thank you but my old brain is too old i think, i have read page 67 and already know about the [EX-TELE CONV] that gives 2.6 in 1080i and 3.9 in 720P extra zoom , so you are not refering to the digital zoom, the page says E T C is 2.6 x but it also says the 14-140mm when in record motion 4.8x + 2,i just dont understand.

Edit thanks for clarifying below roeiz sorry to be dimn on the subject.

it's all very simple.
we're talk about this EX-TELE mode. ok?
that's the mode i was referring to.
when you turn it on (while on 24H film mode), it scales the image about 4.8 on the center of the lens, turning it into pure 1080 sensor.
that's what i know, and the only way i use it. not sure about 720 modes.

I don't see mud I see an image that is underexposed and some noise in the picture. If you really want to test for "mud" why not light a subject properly than decide. To conclude that the footage is muddy, through seeing underexposed footage, isn't very accurate.
