C500: CRL Data Management

What do you do when the RAID is full? Buy a new one? The case is a grand alone and a dock is a tenth of that.

I think you’re dead-on here, in my opinion, and that was exactly what I was thinking when I put my Raid 5 together. I bought pretty close to the highest capacity 7200 RPM drives you can get in 2020 and filled an 8 Bay raid enclosure...even then I am still already at about 30-40% capacity from jump street by the time I loaded in all of the assets, projects, footage, etc. for clients I work with on an ongoing basis. So as time goes on I will be dumping off storage to bare drives via a dock whenever possible to keep from filling up my media raid. Also, as hard drive capacities improve (or the tech becomes better / cheaper / higher capacity per drive), I will switch out the drives within the raid enclosure to give me better storage and speeds - BUT - that will be pretty costly so it won’t be until I absolutely HAVE to that I’ll invest in that many drives again, all at once. Sadly, things like CRL and 6K - 8K - 12K will make this a necessity sooner than I would like.

And one back up isn't just safe no matter if it's a raid. You should backup your editing raid like with a time machine concept too

This is correct as well. Raids give a bit more security /redundancy than JBOD or a “drive in a dock” but then we are getting into the argument that you should have no less than 2 copies and 2 forms of medium/technology (like hard drive and LTO) and in separate geographic locations for true protection / backup but most of us provide storage as a free / value added service so we probably won’t be doing that unless it is for extra special clients / projects OR it’s our own content / assets we can’t afford to lose.
