Needed a break from editing weddings weddings weddings and knocked this up after being particulary impressed with an expresso machine I've recently bought. It's not for anyone but me but I'd love some opinions on it. Recorded with a C100, Eos profile, internal AVCHD, Tamron 60mm f2 macro and graded with MB Looks: https://vimeo.com/77738873

Thanks for the comments. There are a couple of shots where the DOF was too shallow and I would make less extreme on a second. Interesting about shadows Mr FatDaddy, hadn't considered those.

There are so many things that could have improved this coffee video.

The whole point of having a camera that captures change over time is to change the cameras position over time. A tracking shoot or pan/tilt would have made the video much more interesting to watch. Selective DOF makes it easy to guide the eye towards what's interesting. In this case the images looks just like piled on top of each other with only one criteria - shallow DOF. Frankly it's to shallow because the interesting thing in frame is half out of focus or I get the feeling focus is missed. There's one dissolve, that's odd. Why did you make a dissolve? Dissolves seldom makes something great. Often they only serve as a fix for bad eye scanning. If not done on purpose to impose emotions

It's also to dull lighted/graded if you want to make a cup of coffee appealing to the viewer. Question is if you wanted the video to show how to make a cup of coffee or show the actual machine? I see very little of the machine and the final image of the coffee cup could have been so much better had you taken the time to do a proper pack shot. As it's now I don't know what to extract from the short video. A good coffee machine? No. A tasteful cup of coffee? No.

Every video should have a plan and one message.

Thanks for the feedback Ossland. Could you explain what 'pack shot' is please? I agree the DOF wasn't affective on some shots, my kitchen is very small and time was short so it was probably rushed \ could have been better. The dissolve was there as the before and after shots are quite similar in composition and it looked jumpy with a straight cut. I started off with the aim of showing more of the coffee machine but all open shots showing the whole machine weren't appealing due to my kitchen! I suppose it ended up more on the 'how to make a cup of coffee' Thanks again.

Really for me a wider establishing set up. Im not as concerned about the shallow DoF as much but having some shots that do have a deeper DoF would have been nice. Not bad though. Ossland makes a good comment about purpose though.
