Hey guys,

Here's the video I made for the UK's campus movie fest 2011 filmmaking contest. We basically had 5 days to shoot and edit a 5 minute film, and our chosen genre was a really gritty British crime flick. I'd really appreciate any and all feedback that you guys can offer!

Production Details:
Camera: 550D and 7D, converted to Prores for edit, shot in 1080p
Lens: Canon 17-55mm F2.8, Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6
Lights: 2 Redheads, one gelled blue. We turned one of them off for the reverse shot because we wanted a harsh look, which was a mistake so I had to brighten them up in post, leading to the slightly mismatching shots - totally not a fault of the camera.

Anyway, that's it, and I appreciate the time you guys take to see this!

Regards,
Malcolm Ong

EDIT: We got the results last night and we got nominated for Best Director, Best Drama and Best Picture. Didn't win anything, but that's a start!

That was very impressive!!
I see what you mean on the increased exposure turn-arounds. Not too distracting though.

I enjoyed it!!

Hi Malcolm,

Excellent work! I'm a former UCL'er, now kicking myself for leaving before you showed up - between this and Tabula Rasa, I'm really, really impressed with your skills. The attention to detail, precision and ambition in the film-making in Rookie was phenomenal, especially given the time constraints, and the acting in Tabula Rasa was really of a quality you so rarely see from young actors in student productions. I can't rave highly enough about both films.

Great that you've hooked up with Dexter, whose 'Siren Syndrome' is also brilliant. I'm going to be back around UCL again in the new year. Send me an email to sambaron@gmail.com - it'd be great to meet up. I'll be very happy to help out on any of your future shorts.

If you're interested in seeing any of my work, my site is www.sambaron.com

All the best,

Sam

Impressive work. For five minutes, you managed to put in a lot of plot twists, suspense, and surprises, and the actors really sold it. (I only wish you had a more realistic looking badge -- that kinda threw me out of the film for a second.) I also really like how you moved the camera at good points without resorting to just a bunch of cuts (the scene with Tony at the dumpster then turning around to confront the cop and then get shot -- a lot of people would've done that in three separate cuts -- but yours was much more effective). Hopefully, it doesn't sound like I'm just kissing ass -- but that was solid, confident filmmaking. You guys should've won something.

Hey rjk, thanks a lot for the feedback! Unfortunately we didn't win anything at the finals, although we got the most number of nominations - We were nominated for best drama, best director and best picture. It was as though somebody on the board wanted us to win something, but we just couldn't convert haha. Oh well, next year I guess!
