GH13 Creepy Denver International Airport very hyper clear GH13 footage p1

Now steering the thread off the evil lizards , NWO, and drug companies and back to the GH13:

No, it's Blackout's own Native 24p hack. Looks like he's running with a peak bitrate of 55Mbps and a 12-frame GOP. Average bitrate gets up as high as 45Mbps in the busiest sections of the video. While I do see a few empty frames in the video stream, overall, it looks pretty solid.

Damn you! revealing my secrets!!!

Just kidding. But seriously... you're good! I just cautiously bumped my peak data rate up from 52Mbps peak to 55Mbps peak, with backup hacks standing by should it not work. The only time I was ever getting freezes was with stuff like granite or sand - very very fine detail stuff like you see in this shot with all the crazy detail in the granite. I have been meaning to ask you about this for a while but I got sidetracked and also yet slightly scared as to whether I really want to know...but yeah I do...

What do you mean with your comment "I do see a few empty frames in the video stream but overall it looks pretty solid."

I have heard you and others talk about this 'empty frame' or frame error scenario as a reason for not shooting with 24pn checked - but I just ignored it because the 24pn is one of the MAJOR conveniences of the hack to me and very important as it allows native editing in Edius 6 and Vegas 10... with no transcoding to a digital intermediate if you don't want to - so you get the highest end possible master quality out of the camera AND the edit that you can squeeze, and its just been working beautifully for me like a charm - so I didn't want to mess with it for a long time.

I have NOT had the freezing errors and lockups on my A cam that people talk about. My B cam locked up in this very same shot and had to be rebooted and just wouldn't film it. They are both set with the same hack values - so I don't know WHAT the variable is.. I was thinking the transcend class 10 card in the 2nd cam was not as fast as there is some variance in card data rates... but I swapped cards and the B cam still would sometimes lock where the A cam would not. What gives? I haven't tried my bcam with the supposedly superior sandisk extreme SD card because I haven't needed it enough to justify the cost. I just shoot the super high detail stuff with my A cam and shoot close ups or mediums with the B and C cams.... if I am just going somewhere with only one camera - of course I always bring the A cam.

I have imported my stuff into a 23.976 timeline in Vegas and a 23.98 timeline in Edius 6 and I have gone down to a 1 frame level view and stepped through frame by frame and I don't see any "empty" or "duplicate" or "blank" frames.... am I missing something? Is it just in the data stream but the editing programing is correcting it somehow when I go from the raw .MTS to the edited mp4 or canopus super fine hq? What tools are you using to figure this stuff out? I know you have posted some charts and graphs before but rather than searching, and since it is directly relevant, if you could enlighten me a little on this I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

- Blackout

Even though I quoted Gandhi, I am not a total pacifist.

Well, drat. After wading through your earlier essay I had decided to fly over and take your fantastic A cam (maybe the laptop too, sounds good). But now I know you'll set the ferrets on me, I am deterred.

All you need is love + 2x4.

You can't have the A cam but you can have the A ferret... it has clearer non pixelated poop. It also is very loving, and that's all you need. You'll love it.

PM me and I will send you my exact KFC secret recipe settings. I don't want to post the .ini file publicly cause I don't want people blaming me when their camera blows up. If you want to DL and install someone else's hack file, you are WAY BETTER OFF downloading one of lpowell's 'stable' hacks as they are peer reviewed and tested you could say. My hacks are far out there like the insane version of daffy duck on crack.

My hack settings are very very close to this recipe:

There are three empty frames in this video, but they occur in stationary shots where you'd never normally spot them. Here's a Stream Parser screenshot of the empty frames in the video stream:

denverairportstreampars.jpg

The empty frames occur at frame numbers 937, 1008, and 1019 and are each 192 bytes long. I have frame 1008 highlighted and its Packet Data displayed in the upper right panel. In this case, the long sequence of "FF" data stands for "fail", i.e. empty data.

When a decoder encounters these empty frames, it will simply continue to display the previous frame, and the video will appear to pause for the duration of the empty frame. However, as you can see in the Stream Player panel, the camera is sharply focused on a stationary scene, so in this case, you won't even notice the pause.

Sporatic empty frames occur when the camera's video capture process does not quite have enough time to write a frame to the SD card. Typically, it's the last P-frame in a GOP as we see in this case. The empty frame is quick to write, and this gives the camera time to catch up and resync with the video stream. A few empty frames here and there won't ruin a video, however, if the problem persists in GOP after GOP, it indicates that the camera is close to locking up and aborting the video.

Fascinating.... then why in Edius 6 and Vegas 10 do I not detect these empty or duplicate frames? I stepped through the parts or as close to as I can tell, and I see a little motion change EVERY frame in my timeline.... I don't see a repeated frame... so is it ONLY in the mts and then Edius or vegas is ignoring it?

Do you see it say, in this edited video as well that was output from vegas 10:

I haven't used Edius or Vegas so I don't really know, but perhaps they skip the empty frames? I downloaded the mp4 from Vimeo and it looks ok. Bottom line, if you don't see any glitches, I doubt anyone else will. These airport videos look great!

Super stuff, Blackout. Did you get security on tape (i write this from the 90s) ? Will they be in your film?

Looking forward to the CG.

The 90s! You found a wormhole communication device? Awesome! Please say hello to the 90s me, which is currently jumping into a boat in the Sawgrass mills mall, also once again getting stopped by security:

PS: That video was a VHS tape that I don't think I even have anymore, encoded to an ancient real player codec, however it WILL play with the current version of VLC media player.

The TSA came up and halted things for a bit, but I got them laughing and over to my side of the force and they let me continue as long as I didn't "fall to the floor and have any more seizures, as that makes people nervous." Their words.

Of course most people who were watching, seeing me repeat it 4 times new I was filming and were not worried about my life. I would think those evil pictures of mothers with their dead babies and Darth Hitler would make travelers more nervous than me jumping around like Indiana Jones... but I digress...

Hi Blackout. You mentioned somewhere about having an industrial projector. How does this or other GH1 footage look on the big screen? ie 14ft, and larger, if you tried it in a theatre? Does it stand up to scrutiny?

In a lot of movies, dream states are depicted in hazy, slo-mo....I wonder if real dreams are actually closer to this hyper-clear, fast shutter effect!

No... most of my foootage is shot with a proper shutter of 50 or 60. Movies look like movies with 24p motion blur and SOMETIMES fast shutter like in saving private RYAN or some battle / war scenes to give the feeling of paranoia / too much going on / hyper reality.

I did a whole paper on this in college. The LACK of information in 24p actually makes the suspension of disbelief in films work better. It works to the film makers advantage. Keeps the audience in a dream world of sorts. Speed up to 60p - and suddenly that plastic JFK head looks like... a plastic JFK head.

Films look AWFUL in 60p. Take your favorite DVD or blu-ray and play it in one of those players that up the motion up to 60 or 120 - and watch in AWE at how a 100 million dollar movie now looks like a crappy BBC Dr Who episode.

It's the 60p. It does not work for most narrative film making.

SHUTTER increases the SHARPNESS of the edges of the image, not the rate at which they change. Your shutter should be twice the frame rate ideally. 48 shutter motion blur is perfect for 24p and smooths it just the right amount. Frame rate increases the AMOUNT of frames not the sharpness of each frame however shutter must usually match or be higher.

Agreed. 24p keeps you in a dream mode. But when they depict dreams, it's a bit different effect desired, either overexposure, haziness, or slo-mo. Even Inception uses a lot of slo-mo. On second thought, it might be real life nightmares that are more like the Private Ryan effect. Frenetic, studdering. Crank 2 used high shutter speeds and it did sharpen up the XH-A1 footage. But 90 minutes of high shutter hyper anxiety was almost too much for the brain! ..... I was at the original Showscan demos with 70mm 60fps. Although it was real clear, it was just like watch video. All the high frame rate formats like Maxivision48, ImaxHD, Showscan have sorta vanished. Even though research proved 60-72fps raised people's emotional responses to the movie. 24p is still the magic number where the flicker threshold is just right.

Yeah.. high shutter speed tends to give one a paranoid "on speed or meth" feeling. Ever watch the movie SPUN? That is quite a film... they do a lot of high speed shutter stuff and weird cuts. I loved it.. and no.. never touched crystal meth. I stay awake for 6 days at a time naturally.... can't touch even a cup of COFFEE or I might explode.
