Creating in-camera lens flare

How far can one go before damaging the sensor?

Obviously, getting flare does involve some degree of pointing the lens at the sun or some very bright light source but how much is too much?

Is it okay to shoot a flashlight directly into the lens? Or maybe just in on an angle?

Having the sun in your shot for small periods of time shouldn't damage your sensor. People take pictures with the sun visible all the time. Just don't leave your camera pointing at the sun.

As for other lights (like a flashlight), unless you are pointing directly into a gigantic spotlight, you aren't going to damage your camera with any lighting pointing into the lens. If you can plug it in in your house (with very few exceptions), it won't be bright enough to damage your camera.
