Inspired by the cinematography of the Amazon Prime series, "Carnival Row," I wanted to see how difficult it would be to mimic the look of some of the darker scenes. The show is authored in HDR, and so is the linked YouTube clip. It will play in HDR automatically with the Google Chromecast Ultra 4k, or other supporting device or smart tv app, or look perfectly fine in SDR on other devices.
Characteristic of the series, are very dark, richly saturated indoor scenes that appear lit entirely by practicals such as candles, lanterns and sconces. To mimic this look, I set up a candle in front of a clock. I used the false color exposure tool to precisely make sure that no part of the candle flame would clip at any time. I used a key light to illuminate the background, and then brought the exposure down in post to make it appear the candle flames were lighting the scene.
You can ignore if you want, the unrelated filler clips stuffed onto the same timeline, unrelated to the topic.
