creating a true 16:9 DVD

I'm trying to output my DVD to true 16:9, however, when i try outputting the mpg to "widescreen" and play it in media player, it looks as if it's just a 4:3 image with bars on the top, bottom and ALSO the sides! My dad has this crazy expensive panasonic plasma and I want to be able to play a true 16:9 DVD from my DVX onto that screen. My footage was originally shot with a DVX in 16:9 Aspect mode. Thanks

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

What are your project settings? Render settings?

Also, when you say 16:9 aspect mode, do you mean you shot it in sqeeze mode, with an anamorphic adaptor, or in letterboxed mode (which crops the image with bars but retains a 4:3 frame)?

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

yo jive. sorry i wasnt clear enough. Project settings are 24PA, with plain old letterbox mode. Only got ye' old DVX100 ;D

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

Silly me, I said I didn't have any letterboxed footage! :)

Any footage can be letterboxed like it is in camera by adding the bars in post!!!

Anyway, if you didn't find the process on how to turn a letterboxed 4:3 video into a 'true' 16:9 video, then here's the steps...

1) With your footage on the timeline, use the Pan/Crop tool and select the 16:9 preset from the drop down preset menu.
2) Render as AVI with the DV NTSC Widescreen preset (or whatever codec with a widescreen aspect ratio you want).

That's it! ;D

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

Yes! You have to *crop* it to 16:9, not just *mask* it! ;D

Masked 16:9 will always be treated as 4:3 footage.

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

it's wierd... whenever I render my 24PA footage to widescreen (as you guys suggested) with any pulldown, it's all jittery and unwatchable... however, when i render it widescreen 29.970i, it looks fine, but it's still not true 16:9.  There's still space on each side. It's like my video is centered... I dont know if any of this is making sense

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

On the "Render As" screen, make sure that the "Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox)" check box is un-checked.

Also, if you play an anamorphic file in windows media player, it will automatically letterbox it. Try playing it in dedicated software dvd players like power dvd or windvd.

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

damnit, im never going to figure this out.... All i want to do is make an anamorphic dvd. I made sure the clip is 24PA since properties say "DV (removing 2-3-3-2 pulldown)." I dont know why but it's just not doing it... These are my exact steps:

1) File--> New -->
Select Template NTSC DV 24p 720x480, 23.976 fps

2) drag clip in

3) File--> Render As

4) save as AVI, template: NTSC WIDESCREEN 24p(removing 2-3-3-2 pulldown)

5) Check mark "stretch video to fill output..."

voila... jittery and unwatchable in Media Player, but watchable in PowerDVD, except it looks exactly like the original... sigh...... plse help! i must be missing something

No, Make sure it is NOT checked. Also you forgot to crop it to 16:9, If you don't it will stretch the video out to 16:9 and everything will look squashed. So after you import the clip, right click it and choose pan/crop and select the 16:9 preset. Then render the clip and make sure to UNCHECK the "stretch video" option. Hopefully this will work.

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

I'm almost ready to have you send me screen prints of everything so I can see what you're doing . . .

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

lol im ready to send them to you. this is very frustrating... I'll upload some pics to my webpage so you guys can see what's going on

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

When you shoot in letterboxed mode( not sqeeze mode) do you follow the same capturing and rendering procedures as you would do for the regular mode if all you wanted to do was watch it on a regular 4:3 TV. Also when you crop to 16:9 but view it on a 4:3 TV, the dvd player will automaticly apply the black bars to top and bottom right?

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

Yes.

Yes, as long as you set up the DVD as a Widescreen project in DVD-Architect and if the DVD player is set up correctly.

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

Thanks for the fast response. So whats better, Shooting in the regular mode or letterboxed. Can I shoot in letterboxed mode as somwhat of a reference point insted of actually taping off the LCD if i was going to crop to widescreen to view on 16:9 TV. Regardless of what i do(letterbox mode, or crop) will the image still look the same when viewed on a 4:3 TV?

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

How you record is up to you. Recording in non-masked 4:3 gives you more of a margin for error, but there is a slight (and I should stress *slight*) image improvement in the picture area if you use letterbox mode (again, I say *slight*, as in, probably not noticeable).

The image will look the same either way, if it's cropped.

Re: creating a true 16:9 DVD

The only difference would be that if you shoot full-frame with the intention of cropping in post, you could always stick with full-frame if you wanted to. If you shot in letterbox mode, you wouldn't have that option.
