Creating a forum like DVXuser.com? Software?

Hello everybody,

My wife wants to create a forum related to women's issues and is trying to find a good software or format to work with.

Does anybody know what software/engine (?) forums like DVXuser and REDuser are created on? I know nothing about it, but thought this might be a good place to start.

Well it's not really software, it's php coded files packaged up to be pretty damn easy to use. You definately will need to know some PHP (or CGI for YABB) and MySQL to use just about any Bulletin Board software on the internet (mostly just for installation). And most of them are somewhat expensive, $100+. There are others like SMF, PHPBB (free, but not all that great), YABB, IP.Board, ect..... but personally I find vBulletin the best built and easy to use. Most fourms I know of either use vB or IP.Board.

If you ask me dvxuser, reduser and dvinfo.net all look pretty similar. Dvinfo just has a different color scheme.
 
The reason I told her about DVXuser, etc. if really because of how easily I feel they lay out. I agree that they do look really similar. My wife will probably just do hers in pink. :)

I don't mind DVinfo's layout either.

I highly recommend PHPBB over vBulliten. Unlike vBulliten, PHPBB is released under the GPL, so there aren't restrictions on how you use or modify it. There also aren't any license fees to pay.
 
my host offers phpBB for free as part of my package and there is no set-up. Just click a button on the control panel and it does it all for you. It's super common software and should be real easy for you to do.

And PHPBB has the worst layout and feel to the board..... maybe I'm the only one, but I hate being on PHPBB message boards. And you can modify a vBulletin however you want.... you just can't remove the vBulletin copyright at the bottom (unless you pay an additional fee).

I like and use vBuliten for a few reasons, phpbb is not as secure and can be more easily compromised.
I like the admin of VB much better the phpbb.
 
my .02... I manage hundreds of forums (hoping to be thousands) using SMF - I found it very easy to install and modify to my needs...free being the biggest need. I didn't tweak it too much since all the forums are cookie cuttered (is that even a word?) and look exactly the same - check em out if you'd like: http://myhighschoolforum.com and http://neighborlyforums.com

PHPBB sucks, it's the most vulnerable pile of crap... I use Invision Power Board and it's reliable as hell, 1.7 million posts and counting.
 
i prefer IPB. i have used it on many sites and find its a lot faster and easier to use overall. also most mods for vb are made from IPB mods. the major downside to IPB is the price if you actually pay for it.
