Create A New Hd Format?

Ok, here's something I bet you have not thought about.
What about making that 27-28mb codec available so someone can build an HD DVD player we can all afford?
Forget about Blue Ray and all the other HD type players.

Hay, just a thought.

The 28 MB/s stuff probably can't be played back in real-time; it's RAW footage that probably requires considerable processing. Also, no optical disk format is anywhere near 28 MB/s. And a 50 GB disk would only hold 35 minutes of video.

A rather more practical way to make cheap high-def discs is just using H.264 compression on regular DVDs. You can do decent 1080p at around 1.2 MB/s, which gives you two hours of video on a double-layered disk or four hours on a double-sided double-layered disc.

Apple's DVD Studio Pro software has support for creating discs like this, actually, but they'll only play back under OS X. I'm surprised there hasn't been more widespread interest in this approach.

Your so Right Chris.. I remember way back when i got my first G5 tower with DVD Studio pro there was a little flyer that mentioned HD dvds.. but that was the last time i ever heard of it.

There have been some rumbling in the electronics world with WMV HD and DIVX HD players.. but no quicktime 264 stuff as far as I know.

You could always just use a PC as a media server and put the codec on that. Just load up on storage which shouldn't be too hard. Of course this really only works for playing your own personal projects.

H264/WMV-HD/DivxHD are pretty good codecs for HD distro.
