crazy long transcode time

i'm having an issue with transcoding. i shot 1080/30p fx. it was an event so i have 2 clips from 2 different cards. each one is around 80 minutes in length. i started the transcode to prores LT at 8am. it is now 12:45am and it's still going!!! the first clip finished but the second one is only 3/4 done. i am using fcp 7 log & transfer on a new imac i5. i tried it on my macbook pro and same deal. just really slow. anybody have any ideas?

it's strange. if i have a clip that's under a minute, it transcodes pretty much realtime. but the longer the clip is, the slower it gets.

Could be any number of factors.
Run your "activity monitor" and see how much of your computer's resources are being used up.
My advice, is to start as fresh as possible, if your encoding a large clip. So restart your computer and make sure your scratch disks aren't getting near full. Only run FCP and start the importing process.

Also, you can download "MPEG Streamclip" and encode into prores using that... it may be faster.

Might want to break them down into 10 minute segments. Ive done this before with AVCHD because of a similar issue.

Good point Noel, I wouldn't have just 1 large 80min encoding... If the files are in smaller segments (i.e. 4gig clips) then encode all those separately.
I've had problems when it comes to large joined clips... or large clips in general.
