C200: Crane 2 with a C200 or go Helix JR? Lets talk gimbals again

Has anyone seen this video with the Crane 2 and FS5, they also show a C100 halfway through the video.

I'm debating between this Z Crane 2, the Nebula or something like the Helix Jr , what do you guys reckon, could the Crane 2 work?

I went to my local store and I did try the Crane 2 but it was pretty difficult to balance and we couldn't get a full tilt backwards without the evf hitting the handle etc

I am leaning towards the Helix Jr but I do like the idea of this compact style single handed gimbal vs the 2 hand bigger setup with the Helix or Movi 5 etc

Let me know what you guys are using for gimbals on the C200.

Thx Cane

the C200b fits perfectly with no restrictions on my original Ronin-M, however I think the viewfinder on the C200 would probably restrict how far you could tilt up with it

Do you have any photos or videos of your setup. I’m waiting on my C200 to come in and try it on my Ronin M.

Not the crane but should be comparable:

I like the idea with the C200‘s handle mounted to the grip.
One handed / single grip operation would be out of question for me, but even I with those extra grips
I’d probably use a dedicated smaller cam for those single-hand gimbals.

Helix Jr: Some people love it with the original C100, but I find it very complicated to set up well. It's a bit wobbly with the C100/II. I imagine you would need the full-size Helix for the C200, but again, it's complicated to set up and use.

Crane 1: Some guy on YouTube got the C100 to mount on it with possibly usable results: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emP1oEhdBDA

Crane 2: I've tried a stripped-down C100/II in it. It seems to handle the left and right stabilization fine, but if you try to tilt up and down at all the motors give up and the C100/II comes crashing down. I doubt it would work well with the C200 except in extremely limited and carefully planned movements.

The Crane isn’t designed for a camera of that size/weight. If you can get it to balance and if it actually works, it’s going to be suboptimal.

Gimbals work best with cameras that are significantly under their max weight and size limits. Shoehorning a C200 onto a Crane is going to suck for a number of reasons.

I partly agree, but Zhiyun keeps beating their chest about the Crane 2's 7lb capcity. A stripped down C100 is about half that weight (or less), so it should work fine. But it is, as you say, limited.

I think I am coming to the realization that maybe you are right and there still isn't a single handed gimbal that you could just chuck the C200 on but then would be a good gimbal cam option?

I though maybe the Nebula might be the one but haven't seen anyone trying it out with C200 yet and I doubt it would be much different to the Crane 2 for weight etc.

5DMK4 with C-LOG would be the only one I could think of for matching the C-log on the C200 or possibly the older the 1DC but at the cost of no DAF.

I never have liked the look or feel of the XC10/15 cameras and that leaves the more expensive 1DXmk2 with no Log etc

So why buy a single handed gimbal with 5DMK4 combination for around 4000$ when you could just get the Ronin MX for 1600$ and fly the C200?
I'd always prefer using the same camera on regular budget shoots, if gimbal/non-gimbal shots need to intercut seamlessly and if the gimbal shots will make up more than 15% of the final film. In that case I've rented a Ronin in the past.
For that one "walking towards/through/around" establishing shot or b-roll on documentary style projects, I will pull out the Crane M with an LX100.

You pretty much say it right there, with the Crane M on b-roll and Ronin for bigger budget projects.

When on shooting on may own, I like to get some gimbal shots in the mix and I used to do this with an A7S2 and a single handed gimbal and that was fine but the C200 is a very different image and look and I just don't have the time on some projects to have a ronin rigged up, other projects yes, I would just hire another shooter ready with 2nd c200 already to go but when it's just me, I want to pull out a single handed gimbal just to have some options in the edit.

I have sold the A7s2 and was thinking the 5D4 to replace it but when I saw the video above I thought maybe I could get any with a Crane 2 but it's not looking ideal so I'm thinking a used 1DC or 5D4 for the gimbal cam.

The 1DC and 1DX are very heavy cameras. They are heavier than a Canon C100 and basically the same weight as the C200. I would doubt that the Crane 1 would be able to handle a 1DC. I am not sure about the Crane 2 as I haven't tested it, but I really doubt it would work out well.
