Covid-19 (Novel Coronavirus) - Effects on the production industry

It's not a big deal until your loved one dies.

Exactly... bottom line, I don't know how anyone could say a disease that's ~2x as contagious as the flu and ~20x as deadly "isn't a big deal", even if they aren't the populace most affected. I think the "not a big deal" sentiment is more a reaction to the media hysteria and severe overreaction, not the facts of what we're talking about.

The combination of a double - let's take a conservative estimate rather than 2.5-3 - and a much higher death rate should mean a huge death toll in China alone. But 3,000 in a nation of 1.5 billion, let alone a nation of 1.5B living and commuting in tight spaces, seems a statistically minuscule number.

This is incorrect. The death rate is taken from the population of people who get INFECTED, not the total population.

Will the demand for videos/commercials/films dwindle while we deal with this health hazard? Are there any opportunities here? Is there anything that we are positioned to do with our craft to help others?

I've done 2 corporate CEO/Executive addressing the troops re Corona virus- stay calm, business plans, contingency plans, travel reductions, more telecommuting, etc.

Neither was in place of a cancelled conference, but I'm sure there's opportunities in shooting the scheduled participants of a conference minus 2000 attendees.

I'd love to do something that helps, but not sure what...

I'm taking my first Corona flight this week, to a shoot in NY. Was surprised to find myself a little nervous.
Will have a window seat to keep me off the aisle and all the people trudging down it.

My point was that, lacking the immediate quarantine, the Chinese totals of both the infected and the diseased should be magnitudes higher. Simply due to the population size, if for no other reasons.

Order plenty of drinks. And I don't mean Coke and Pepsi. Disinfection is the key.

But it’s not over yet. It’s not like a virus appears and everyone gets infected immediately. It was exactly the draconian Chinese containment efforts that slowed it from spreading more widely in the country. I don't want to be an alarmist, but I don't think we should downplay the risks from this thing either. There's a reason China took the steps they did to contain this, and they wouldn't have taken the resulting hit to their economy if they didn't have to.

Of course, it's pretty hard to estimate the exact degree of risk since the numbers of the potential infection and the susceptibility to the virus are not really quantified. I suppose one should carry some sort of sanitation device - if you can call wet-naps a "device" - with him and wipe his hands and nose every so often.

And take a tea spoon of Absinthe a couple of times per day.

PS. So I mentioned a while ago that I have a recent FB friend, who's a surgeon in the old country. So he created a DIY face mask -- a paper towel sprayed by a disinfectant and tied around the head with a rubber band. Some other dude replied with a pair of underpants - high cut briefs - that did not need a rubber band when placed over the face. Jacques Plante would be proud.

Taking a different look at it, I looked up the death rate of all surgeries. A survey of 62,000 surgeries in a 10 year period had a death rate of .97%. So the virus is twice as deadly as surgery.

The AJA announcement to me was a bit of an eye opener.

It may be too late for the larger companies to stop whatever plans they have in place for NAB until the government decides for them.

SXSW here in Austin is still scheduled to run later this month despite several large companies like Twitter, Facebook and Intel pulling out.

One cancelled job (that I know of)... granted, this job was going to be at a hospital facility where there was a reported case....

As long as the shoot isn't rescheduled for the funeral home.

(it's a joke, people)

There's a reason China took the steps they did to contain this, and they wouldn't have taken the resulting hit to their economy if they didn't have to.
But China only took the draconian steps after sitting on their hands (or trying to sweep the virus under the rug) for way too long.
The classic authoritarian behavior of trying to control something by merely controlling information.
And Mr. Covid evidently didn't get the email...

With 100% guaranteed none of the potential benefits.

As long as the shoot isn't rescheduled for the funeral home.

Oh, that dark, dark sense of humor from the old country, my friend...
Keep it up and we'll make Minsk meat of your jokes...

(Makes me wonder, are stand up comics mining Corona gold for jokes yet?
Since they like to prove they have no limits...)

I did one a month ago before it had gotten serious. "I don't have a Corona virus. I have a Dos Equis virus. It was passed onto to me by the Most Interesting Man in the world."

A Corona a day keeps the virus away. I'm drinking Corona's to ward it off.

Technically speaking, the Hemingway Cure - so named after that writer dude - involves hard liquor, which disinfects the intestines and the digestive track where a lot of viruses settle. There is probably a minimum alcohol percentage requirement, as Ernest proved. The CDC recommends that one clean his hands with a rubbing alcohol several times daily but, for various reasons, they can't recommend a hard liquor consumption to everyone. In the US, one can legally buy liquor with a 90% plus alcohol content, which would make it ideal ... for washing hands. Anything in the 40% range is sufficient - major brands vodka, gin, rum, brandy, whisky - for frying out the intestines.

I still recall the exchange between Sonny Corleone and Paulie Gatto, "Have a little brandy. That'll help sweat it out". I am sure Sonny could afford a quality French cognac but why waste it on the guy whom you're going to waste anyway. Adventures with a box of cannoli aside, Sonny had a point.

PS. Back in the USSR, my dad once got a jar of pure alcohol from someone. It was probably samogon (moonshine vodka, Soviet style) rather than the industrial ethanol but he always drank it with a water chaser. He also dropped some orange peels into it, in order to get some flavor. Now, I know what you're going to ask, "Where the heck did you get orange peel in Minsk?" The answer is I stood in line for oranges, along with everyone else.

PPS. At the end of the "junior high", in the 8th grade, we were allowed to throw a school shindig for our study group of about 35 students. Someone brought in pure alcohol - and, no, it wasn't a teacher/chaperone - and a couple of kids took a few shots, using the water from a boys bathroom sink as a chaser. There was no report from the CDC on which substance - pure alcohol or the water from the bathroom faucet - was more dangerous for a 14-year old deviant.

I always try to add a Russian accent when I read your posts. "I stood in line for oranges like everyone else". It's much better with a Russian accent.

I live in an area with a large Polish population. All of the local liquor stores carry a Polish drink called Spirytus. It is 190 proof.
