Couple of FS100 Projects

The forum is for anyone that's interested in the FS100, and especially anyone that owns one. Dan Owns an FS100, he's completely qualified to post his findings and questions. I went and read through EVERY page of all three of those threads, and what it looks like to me is an owner trying to sort out issues that he hasn't encountered before. And, within those threads, a few other people encountered the same exact issues as Dan.

No one said he wasn't qualified, He's just not contributing anything of really any use other than complaining about things he could probably fix if he took more time to learn his camera.
So Kholi would you say that more people on this forum get good work out of this camera or bad work?
We get he dosen't like the camera end of story let's move on.

Understood, but my point is: there are flaws with every camera, and yet danstone has found that the fs100 is the only camera that needs 3 threads on why it's not this and that.

Three threads in the span of an entire year. Context.

The title of the first thread he started was: "the fs100 looks so video-ish" say what you want but there has been several people telling him to try this, and that, but danstone has comes off, as being closed to whatever suggestion is made.

I read every single post in all three threads, I didn't see him turning down any ideas, just that he didn't get what was going on. What I did see was Dan offering examples in the other two threads, the reflections thread caused many to investigate and some to come forward about the fact that they sawr it as well. In the end, they figured it out.

I'm no professional, and I'm here to soak up whatever I can, but the guy just seems kinda negative to me.

Doesn't seem negative to me. Just an owner/operator that owns the camera in question trying to figure it out, and disagreeing with other people. I guess when you disagree with someone then it's negative.

The whole "the fs100 looks so video-ish" is crazy subjective, and then before long here is another thread about reflection issue, and now it's why his company refused to buy 9 more fs100's.

It looks video-ish to me, as well, and a few other FS100 owners. Like I said, the reflection issue was something others saw.

Your right he can post whatever he wants, I'm far far from PRO, I was just stating my opinion, as I noticed he has no threads or post in the AF100, or anyother section, but maybe the other cams need no fixes/critique? I guess, take my whole spill with a grain of salt.

Honestly, it came off to me that you were passively naming him a troll and I investigated (again, by reading the entire thread) because trolling's not tolerated here. Even if I didn't agree with him, and I don't on switching from the FS100 to the AF100 by any measure, he's not trolling. He owns the camera, he works with it, he's SHOWN his work with it and some people in this thread actually thought it was good.

He doesn't own any other camera it seems, and doesn't own an AF100 yet. Maybe when he gets that camera he'll post about his findings and unhappiness with certain things.

No one said he wasn't qualified, He's just not contributing anything of really any use other than complaining about things he could probably fix if he took more time to learn his camera.

The reflections thread I saw as a contribution, if you read it all they all came to a pretty solid conclusion that EVERY camera has it, and it can be exacerbated or tamed depending on how you use the camera. How is that not contributing?

So Kholi would you say that more people on this forum get good work out of this camera or bad work?

I have no stake in the camera. I like it a lot, but I haven't seen much encouraging narrative work floating around. James Miller's stuff is what I'd point to if people were asking for examples of great footage from the FS100.

We get he dosen't like the camera end of story let's move on.

Really? because, I saw Dan post in all three of the threads that he thinks the camera is superb.

Did you see a post that says he doesn't like the camera? I agree with a lot of his points, but I still like the camera, I'm still going to use it.

What it looks like to me (which is pretty common) is that a few people just don't like to read negative opinions about the tool they've chosen. Basically calling him a Troll, saying he hasn't the skill, etc is pretty strange. If you like the tool that much, then post work that proves the opposite.

Dan did put his work up for others to see... just saying.

And, I'm not even sure why I feel the need to defend him, pretty sure he can do that on his own but I found the responses kind of odd's all.

Carry on.

Kholi, I never said disagreeing with someone, is negative, and I never called him a troll. My words are here for you to quote, there is no reason to change them!

EXAMPLE: If I say the GH2 looks so video-ish, it has bad reflections, and I refuse to buy multiples of the GH2, at that point it's really no reason to seek help on making it better... I have already decided it's not for me! As you said, carry on.

I didn't change your quote. I specifically said "it came off to me" and that's exactly how I sawr it. You posted three threads that Dan started being negative, that clearly looks like suspicions of a troll to me (as a moderator). No, you never called him a troll, but then what was the point of digging up his threads? What were you trying to prove out if not that?

The guy has a different opinion, he put his money down on a camera and in each thread was trying to get to the bottom of something he had a problem with.

He has every right to do that right here on this forum. And if you disagree with what he said you're free to voice it respectfully.

Again, (sorry Rick), but using Rick Burnett as an example having issues with Highlights, is he saying the camera's not for him? How many posts has Rick made about the Highlight issue (which IS an issue, to a lot of us). Should he move on despite wanting to find a solution to his problem with a camera that he likes a lot?

I personally don't think so. Reading through Rick's posts specifically helped me realize that I wasn't crazy and there're ways to make it "better", perhaps not totally cure it.

I was not trying to prove anything, other than saying his only activity was the "video-ish, sensor reflection, and now the reason they didnt buy 9 more fs100's" post. My point is: we could all see from his prior post activity that the FS100, was not on his favorite tools list, and he felt it was not for any pro type work.
I honestly cant see why he would need to point that out after he clearly represented that his prior issues with the camera left him wanting to punt it! Why would you want 9 more of a camera, that you already said a non paying client complained about, for an issue that you felt couldn't be corrected or overlooked! IMO just seems redundant.

Again he can post whatever he wants, your points are taken, as I said "understood" in my third post to this thread.

Kholi lets just face the facts you support his case because he supports your oppinion for the
most part, I've read your post. Unfortunatley most people on this forum who own this camera
don't and have found ways to overcome some of the problems he list. My advice to both
of you is learn how to use the camera better drawing from the input on this forum, and as far as the troll statement goes, those are your words not mine.
This will be my last post in this thread as it has become
counter productive, and serves no real purpose in
increasing my knowlege of the FS100.

Easy, guys. I'm fairly certain you didn't read all of my posts so I'm going to stop debating the same points.

For those who asked and are interested, I'm going to pull some before/after clips when I have the time. Be prepared - I know many of you are going to look at it and find it completely acceptable and that's totally fine. We all have differing needs and expectations, and if you're happy with the footage, you are the FS100's primary demographic.

The footage is great--but not for every situation.

That would be really useful, along with what the issues you have found are

many thanks

I gotta admit.....I'm curious why you would need 10 cameras? (be they af100, fs100, scarlet etc)

Production time, specific cameras for certain rig's, 2-3 off set shoots going on at the same time. Just a smaller version of The Hobbit, where they had 50 odd.

We're slated to shoot a reality-type show for network broadcast. We're going to have 3 crews (3 cameras each) in 3 different places. The extra camera is a backup. It's filmed in a similar way to "The Pitch". I call it "it's a reality show but they still managed to work in a dolly and lights."

We should call up Peter Jackson and ask him why he needed 48 RED cams on The Hobbit :P

He'd probably say, I've got a $250 mil budget, so I have to spend it all or I look like an idiot. We even have one that holds up the bad table leg over there.....Oh and there's one over there that keeps the door open...

So I just got word that the FS100 is one of several formats on our network's "unacceptable formats" list. Maybe I'll call Discovery and tell them that you guys said the banding, noise and reflections are just user error. That last part was me trying to be funny.

I pulled some quick examples of some of the problems I was talking about. There are worse but I'd have to sift through 3 hard drives worth of footage to find them. These are ungraded, straight from the camera. Once graded, these problems multiply and become even more apparent.

And just to recap, here's the sensor reflection video from a while back:

Disclaimer: I understand that many of you are going to look at this and see nothing wrong. That's okay because that means the camera was designed for and marketed to you. I also understand that this camera is entry-level and does an amazing job for what it is. I'm not saying it sucks; I'm just saying it's not acceptable for our purposes.

Dan, who cares what your network says about the FS100. I can tell you not very many people on this forum. As I said before, learn how to use the camera instead of blaming all your problems on it. It grades well and I get great footage out of it, in fact I am shooting a shot comedy in the middle of June with three of them. If you don't like the camera, and you don't want to take the time to learn how to use it correctly then post on a forum for a camera you do like. Frankly, I am tired of hearing your complaints and I am not really sure why you post on a forum for a camera you really have nothing good to say about! Personally I think you like the attention!

Really...

So all the other Professionals that purchased the FS100 (including you) fell victim to Sony's marketing strategy, that was targeted towards the entry level user? It's funny because your company of professionals almost purchased 10 of these entry level camera's that SONY marketed towards a crowd that is unable to recognize an acceptable "NON-PRO" image. I mean, you say the camera was marketed towards those that "look at this and see nothing wrong", but you own one.

That's hilarious.

AVCHD is unacceptable for most networks around the world. Nothing to do with the camera. It's not based on QAing the footage, but simple bitrates and 'on paper' specs of the codec.

Of course there are many ways to avoid AVCHD.

Okay, well the sensor reflections you are getting seem worse than mine (but we've been through that in the other thread).

But what are the other problems in that footage that you're seeing, that multiple and become more apparent? Vimeo may be hiding them?

cheers
