Corrado Part II

So I've been getting enough requests lately that it looks like I'll be making a low budg behind the scenes on Corrado.

Many of you will recall that I did not shoot BTS footage on Corrado. One of the mistakes, for sure.:(

What I'm thinking of doing is to get the core actors for a couple days and go on a tour of some of the locations we shot at, get interviews with them, and perhaps VO those interviews over the mega stills I have. I also have tons of outtakes. There is a chance that the CNN guy has BTS stuff (he was on our set for 5 days) and will be able to provide this as a bonus.

This will be more 'education like' than BTS like, really. This stuff will not appear on the DVD because my sales agent said it wasn't necessary for distribution for my intended market.

My goals for this DVD will be:

1. Entertainment - like a reality show detailing the making of concentrating more on the actors and anecdotal recounting of the events from them while touring some of the actual locations. Hopefully it will be about an hour long.

2. Education - See my mistakes...in HD!

3. Memorialization of my first feature film (personal)

Since I will have expenses in making this I will have to charge for it - I figure about 15 bucks per dvd. I know I always said I'd give free info and as long as it's online, I'm happy to give away my time, but in this case I have to pay to recreate what I should have done in the first place.

Moderators, if this thing gets off the ground, I'll pay my fair share to DVX.

So I suppose this is kind of a "are you interested" type post. If there is enough interest, I will do it.

Let me know.

INTERESTED!

and, i, too, didn't have the foresight or money for BTS footage and shot it all after the fact in my game room. COUNT ME IN!

I'd buy it, I'd pay double that amount for it but don't forget you can offer that as a bonus on the dvd of your movie to increase the value of it with distributors. Either way go shoot it bro, I wouldn't worry about the actors too much I think every person here cares more about a video of you on camera talking about the the experience, the how to's and walking us through it on a Robert Rodreguz level but more in depth.

That would be SOOOO SSWWEEAATT!

Hey, why don't you ask all us indies what we would like to see about the making of Corrado and shoot it that way?

I'm sure it would top RR's behind the scenes of El Mariachi.

Maybe a 4 hour film school instead of a 10 min film school :)

HNY!

Well RR had the benefit of being on his set with his film school so he could show you how the shots were pulled off. You guys are already accomplished filmmakers technically - I think my angle is to show more of the pitfalls / experience side.

But hell yeah, tell me what you want to see bearing in mind I am not on set.

For true BTS stuff I might be able to obtain the CNN stuff - we'll see. The dude was rolling continuously for five days so keep your fingers crossed!

Oh you aren't the only one. I was smarter on "Wages of Sin" but we have absolutely NO footage on making "The 4th Beast". Absolutely none. We have a lot of choreo footage on "Wages" but no real production stills. We had an actor take photos every once and awhile and but no dedicated person on this. This time we will have an intern with the camera and a another intern taking BTS video for us.

I think you should just move on to your next film and have interns shoot and take photos of the production with handheld camera. I would and to see what's actually happening on the set as opposed to just interviews and stills. Stills are for press packets.

as i'm sure you are, be wary of SAG on this endeavor. they have stipulations on payouts for featurettes over 30 minutes and actors are supposed to be paid for the day to do interviews or shoot behind the scenes, etc. another reason to get this stuff on set. haha!

looking forward to seeing what you cook up.

Good point; a quick check to the actor's contracts reveals that this was part of their original compensation....so they owe me!

I think I can make something pretty nice here in the downtime between Corrado and RRB. Let's see how it goes!

Funny, I had two set photogs but no BTS camera, although several people did offer....

Hopefully the CNN guy has stuff.

This thing will be worth it just for the outtakes alone!

All you need is to do a few things:

1. (15 mins) Tell the Tale of Making the Tale: Basically you need to encapsulate what you have written here. Tell us about how you, wanted more than anything else, was to make a feature. So then go ahead and tell us, here's what I did....

Use a crummy camera in B&W for your talking head stuff (it makes the other footage look better) add some stills, wife & kids, pics of day job, getting your gear together, truck, tell us your idea of what you wanted for the future. I think you said you were going to do this all the time so I might as well own all the gear, etc... later on you can come back and tell us what you learned and why you sold off the gear and other bits of wisdom.

Tell us about doing it all; no one to help you out. Help us see the pain & suffering of trying to do it all, how passion and determination kept you going. Tell us about getting locations, money, getting talent, etc... you have everything already recorded as an on-line journal, pull from it!

Overall, give us a tight encapsulation and leave us wondering (cliff hanger) about this unending story (you the film maker) and your next feature.

2.(18 mins) Inside a Scene: Pick one scene and go indepth.

WRITING: Show us the screenplay up close, coffee stains and all. Shows us one scene, read it through completely, use V/O of what the scene means, how it was conceived, its importance in the story. Show us some stills of you writing, some sketches fo characters, locations etc... pre production work. This is where we get to see into your head and visit with your fantasy world.

PRODUCTION: Show us raw uncorrected footage with v/o of the shots and how you & the actor are taking it off the page and putting it onto the screen. Tell us about trying to direct & produce at the same time. Make us feel the pressure. Use stills, a few various angles of the same scene passage and any of the CNN BTS stuff. This is where we get to see how the fantasy took shape in the real world. This is where all sorts of compromises often occur & sometimes actors or circumstances deliver wonderful gifts you could have never imagined.

POST: Show us a few angles and then how you cut them together. Play it out with uncorrected sound & color. Then show us how it looks CC while sitting with the colorist, and then add the Sound and music while sitting with the sound guy. Finally run the finished scene. Compare it to your original envisioned scene you wrote. Tell us how well it kept true and what changed for the worse and better. We should feel the tremendous labor involved in just putting together one scene.

WRAP IT UP: Leave us with a few words of wisdom, caution and encouragement to all actors, film makers and those who champion a creative society.

You can create this without having to go back in a time machine or fret about not having those so called vital moments. This could actually be much better than just BTS of looking at gear. This could actually address the film making process not gear usage.

how you & the actor are taking it off the page and putting it onto the screen.

YESYESYES.
as a director, this would be amazingly insightful and interesting. i'm still amazed how an actor can interpret a line or action, how a director can get an actor to change their performance, etc.

the other stuff is also really good.

Cool 10s, very cool.

I had close to this idea minus the "in depth scene" which is a great idea. I also wanted to let the actors speak for themselves a bit tooso it's not just me rambling off.....

Awesome ideas guys! Keep 'em coming.

So this will be longer than 30 min?

I shot the BTS for a movie over the summer that a friend produced and directed, it was shot on two red's. It was a lot of work, not many people make the time & effort to do this.

Hey Adam I think it would be great value to hear the actors talk about why they decided to go with your production. Its obvious that they want work but many actors of this calibre would not do a movie with this size of a budget. I would like to hear them talking about what excited them enough to come on board. It would be insightful to hear their thoughts about the movie. If you have to pay them thats a decision you have to make but I think hearing them would add a lot to the production.
