Coronavirus Economics/Finance

All we had to do was isolate ourselves for two or three weeks and this would all have been over. Have everyone stock up on rice and beans, ramen, whatever, pick a date, and sit tight for two weeks. Instead, we go on for months and perhaps years. New Zealand did it (now covid free for 100 days). Why can't we?

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

You can't completely snuff it out with isolation because too many people have to keep going to work and caring for other people, etc, spreading the virus that way.

If we had been testing and contact tracing before we got hit, we never would have had to quarantine at all! Of course, who has that much foresight? The real crime is that we're not doing proper containment even now...

Like the sheriff in FL that has banned his deputies and department employees(900 people) from wearing masks, along with barring any civilians from entering the sheriffs department while wearing a mask.

I get inside an elevator earlier today, with a much younger lady already in it. I tell her, "I'll stand in the opposite corner, next to the control pad". She replies, "Oh, not to worry. It's all exaggerated anyway".

Was at Burger King a few nights ago, about 9:30 PM, it's already dark outside. Six Russian teenagers inside. Four guys, two girls. Masks pulled down. One of the girls gets her burger, immediately starts eating it, though indoor dining is verboten.

That's dumbfounding

And ironic that this state is basically THE hotbed of the virus in the world right now and at the same time you have probably the highest concentration of professional multi-million dollar athletes in the country, if not the world, sequestered away and "isolated" in a "bubble" there, too.

I already have one friend that's been in "the bubble" since the beginning and another that is going through the two-week isolation/quarantine process right now to get in. That SOB is gonna make a killing by the time it all wraps up. He's getting paid right now to sit in his hotel room for two weeks, until he clears.

That's some Florida sheriffs for you...

"Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods of Florida has banned his deputies from wearing a face mask to work despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The new order was enacted on Tuesday and it also prohibits any visitors to the sheriff’s office from wearing a face covering...

“We can debate and argue all day of why and why not," he added.

"The fact is, the amount of professionals that give the reason why we should, I can find the exact same amount of professionals that say why we shouldn’t.

Since the beginning of this pandemic the operation of this office has not changed and no wearing of masks has been put in place..."

He continued, "This is no longer a debate nor is it up for discussion. Please keep in mind this entire pandemic is fluid and constantly changing the way things are done. However, my orders will be followed or my actions will be swift to address."

Woods' ban came on the same day Florida set a new single-day record for coronavirus-related deaths with 277 new deaths statewide reported on Tuesday, per the Tampa Bay Times. In Marion County alone, 13 new deaths were reported on Tuesday."

Deifies logic, common sense and science. I want to see him find 50% of medical and epidemiology/virology research people say "Yeah, you don't need to wear a mask".
I'll hold my breath (since he won't let me wear a mask in his office) while he rounds them up...
Abe, try not to spit your coffee out (in an aerosol) when you read this.

Yay. We're #2 in something bad, instead of #1.

Just read the article. What's really surprising is that he also banned hand-washing and mandated that if you sneeze, you must cover your face with a doorknob.

Ok, I get all that. We can't let the virus tell us how to live. But I dont get why he had the bathrooms renovated and installed group showers

6 national restaurant chains in deepest trouble amid COVID-19 include Outback Steakhouse, IHOP and Denny's

The local IHOP here in my city has closed permanently. I’m not sure how the Outback is doing. The parking lot was always packed pre-pandemic, but the IHOP always seemed busy, too. Outback always had a good to-go business, but I didn’t use it much, because it’s just such a waste of money and disappointing. I’m paying the exact same amount of money I would pay to sit inside and be waited on, minus the tip, but the food is never as good, they usually screw something up/forget something and it’s usually cold/luke-warm at best, by the time you get home with it. And my driveway to their parking lot is exactly ONE mile, so there should be no excuse for the food to be cold.

So I just talked with my handler at Christie's about shooting artwork b-roll next week.

She mentioned that during quarantine, they started offering a "remote filming" discount package to clients for shooting stuff themselves with an iphone. And now a lot of clients want to continue those super low rates even though proper filming can happen again. Surprise, surprise.

It seems like little casual interviews are no problem. She ran into trouble trying to shoot dramatic jewelry footage.

People have been saying this for a while, but it's just further confirmation that "good enough" iphone shooting will take over some of the easier stuff

There are hundreds of "cinematic" smartphone clips on the Tube. And one can pick on banding, codec, compression artifacts, the dynamic range, etc., but on the better shot clips, they're barely visible to a naked eye.

Still, I'd venture a guess that those made by non-pros in the above case weren't very good. But it was deemed good enough, given the fees paid.

It's been happening at the network level for years, now. 10 years ago no one in their right mind would have thought about shooting network talent without a broadcast camera and professional crew that, even more importantly, knew how to light them. Now, not only are broadcast/professional cameras not being used, there is no or very little lighting being used AND the talent are shooting themselves.

A few months ago, one of my friends, a network reporter that I've worked with for decades, shot his own interviews, b-roll, stand-up and live shot ALL with an iPhone. Someone showed it to me on-line and it was meh... But I actually saw it on-air and I cried a little, because it wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been, as far as absolute image quality. Outside of the high-end, our days are numbered, as dedicated photogs. We were already being phased out, but the pandemic has greatly accelerated it.

it may have been more that she didn't know how to use the iphone to get the results she wanted. she basically said that the auto-exposure was fouling up her shot.

but even so - camera moves, focus pulling...i think i would have a hard time getting the results i wanted for macro jewelry shooting with an iphone

When the economy recovers, the video pyramid will likely expand due to all the streaming services and a correspondingly gigantic level of investment that they have already attracted and will attracted further. My take is that these streamers will soon begin including not only the big budget TV/feature productions but everything else too. Including cat videos. And car, smartphone, video game/console reviews and everything that the eyeballs can follow. And then the daily rates might fall but that will be offset by the increased amount of work. The work will be there. You'll just have to follow it.

Well the good news is I'm ALREADY a jack of all trades bottom feeder, so it won't be much of an adjustment :) (I'm being a little harsh on myself, but I do try to diversify. You can make more money as a specialist but you're also more vulnerable to whatever happens in that corner of the industry)

Had a little laugh about this. I worked that job at Outback for two years in high school about twenty years ago and always thought I was a rock star at it. I preferred to be the person assembling the order in the back. Minimal face time with the customers. I always thought of it as series of checklists and had a system for everything, which might explain how I ended up in video production. And now I'm about to hit the decade mark as a vegan.

But you're right, takeout from most restaurants is never as good as dining in. It doesn't take long for the steam to condense on the lid and drip back down into the food. Everything gets a little soggy.

The work will be there. You'll just have to follow it.

One can only hope. Maybe we'll all end up competing against each other on Fiver, doing quick little 15-minute edits of iPhone videos. That is, until The Algorithm is perfected and AI starts doing the editing faster and better.

In all seriousness, the current climate is pushing me back towards corporate in-house after breaking away from it five years ago. That is, if I can even find it. For all its creative limitations and ideas killed by committee, suddenly that seems like a pretty good place to be for a while.

Even when other gigs postings were totally gone, I continued to see corporate jobs posted (to work remotely for now).
