Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

I am 1hs stable on 3.3 but I should know by tonight how much of the remaining 0.075 I can get... then again I might just let it run overnight like so and let it be till X38 mobos are available...

I think Audi will be able to pull off 3.8 24/7 and work-safe if he can get the temps stable... makes me want to go Abit Pro but not sure if it is worth the hassle right now, least not till the possibility of a BIOS update by ASUS feeding us more GTL volts is completely exhausted

EDIT: 2hs 10min of Prime95 and counting

I see you got your quad Roberto.....Yu happy with it? Lotsa fun tweaking huh....Men kholi with 3.8 thats nuts.....Me i got tired of tweaking and i just run it 3.24....Sorry i did not catch you on Skype yet...been kind of busy between work and setting a pilot for a cooking show.
Cheers,
Pierre

That's cool, but I do want to talk about Vegas/Raylight and Quads...

I might be getting a new MoBo by the way guys... I don't want Kholi beating me

Seriously though I even had to take out two of my RAM sticks! Cause the thing can't keep up... but I need SLI... but not yet.... aghhh pulling hairs here

Unfortunately I have the P5N32-E SLI which was promising but apparently the 680i chipset has something about it that made all designs using it have moderate ammounts og GTL voltage (possibly other things involved) and this makes them unable to OC quads like all P35 boards...

On the ASUS boards with P35s the Q6600 G0 seem to be running equally (there are several ASUS with P35 all getting similar results) and those results are impressive to say the least... 3.6 is practically 100% assured with low moderate voltages and unreal temps... you can stabilize up to 3.8 or even 4.0 if you get lucky and your house is cooold!!!

So I'd say witgh a good air cooler, good seating with AS5 paste and proper North Bridge cooling expect to get to or get extremely close to 3.8GHz...

I am running at 3.3GHz with 0.05V more than Intel's specs and I finished an 11hs stability run which means this is about as stable as you want it to be... 24hs is nuclear attack proof but 11hs basically means you are rock solid and can expect to see no problems at all unless you have a 5hs render after a loooong editing session... and there basically are no 6hs renders... a 3hs feature (if no GPU based CC is applied) would take you about 6hs... now that's the bad board... move on to a p35 board and you will see 3.6GHz with the same 1.4V! same stability probably...

3.6 can me made 24hs stable easily on a P35...

all of this is currently developing though so ask again in a week and we'll be able to tell you exactly what's going on and what the averages are... but these are insane!!!

if you are editing on a Quad optimized NLE you should give this one a loong hard look...

BTW Vegas/Raylight seems to be getting a 157% improvement from 3.15GHz Duo to 3.3GHz Quad on renders but previews don't seem all that affected (STILL HAVE TO TEST WITH 1:1 LCD WHICH IS WHAT PIERRE USES FOR 24fps RT FULL SCREEN)

Good news.

I'll have to see if my "budget" can afford an upgrade.

Temps aren't a problem at all for me with my case so if I upgrade I should be able to get pretty high.

...and I just installed a window cooling unit right by my desk, so the area around my desk stays at around 73 degrees all the time. :)

heheh nice one dude... I was considering that for a while but I figured if I got the vents dialed in right I could get the loft cool enough and the same power bill at the end of the day... I had to resort to gaffer tape and white sheets of paper to get just the right ammount of air from each vent but the double high ceiling was finally tamed :)

If you have the proper CPU HSF - heat sink + fan - you should be in exelent shape with 73F.... that is my average up here too... I did take some extra measures but my temps are not just impressive from the G0's nature but ridicolous (IMO) I am getting 58C on LOAD! I don't think I am hitting 60C peaks anymore now that the paste baked a bit!... but remember there is a whole lot of headroom.... 72C is the edge with G0 stepping! :thumb:

I am looking at the September release of the X38 mobo!!! (I just heard that date, hope it is true!) but we'll see what they come in at... I am not a premium paying type o' guy and still have to get lavs upgrade to a 302 from MixPre and really need some sort of HD interview capacity... FS-100 is not my cup o tea... but cards are just too much and depreciate too fast... might be renting till I get a recurring account but renting is the devil!

Anywho... here are some pics...

it is a Tuniq Tower 120

heheh tower ~= skyscraper :)

then u r in good shape playa... if you were to find that 3-5C drop could help you you might want to buy some wet sanding paper, tape it to a glass surface and sand down the bottom of the cooler making it as flat as possible... heheh but you have to be a bit OCD for that cause it will take you about 30 to 50min hehehe...

or if you don't mind a bit of a louder fan you could get a Silverstone from Newegg which runs 400rpms faster and gives you 40 cubic feet per minute more airflow...

I only mention these cause if you have a good MoBo with a P35 chipset you will become limited by temperatures before the MoBo or the chip want to stop pushing

Resurrected.
Not for editing or such, but I just build this cheap'o PC.
Cost: 250€ (do the math)

Paid items: Asus mobo, CoreDuo 1,6Ghz, 1GB RAM, 120GB SATAII, Power Supply, CPU Fan.
It will be used as a backup mail server.

if that's an ASUS MoBO you could expect to get much more out of the Duo!

What MoBo is it? and What CPU? What RAM?
Let's OC that thang!

now I don't think those self-rolled cigarettes will help but you can thry them :)

I just discovered 4 screws to mount the power supply - taken from an antique Pentium 450Mhz machine I'm keeping here for historical reasons.

I don't think I will be over clocking this thing. Here is the comedy part. Brands:
- Asus P5VD2-VM
- PS Fortron 350W
- RAM Teamgroup ( ... )
- Drive WG
- CPU Cooler... uhm... unknown.

My New PC!:love4:

MB Striker Extreme 680i
CPU quad core 2.66 Q6700
4GB G-Skill 6400 DDR2
Zalman CNPS 9700 fan
AS5 thermal paste

Running between 25-28C° at 3.33 ghz with 1333 FSB. Completely Stable!

I'm not a pro at OC'ing so I'm hesitant to take it further.

USLatin, you seem to know your way around OC'ing, got any advise for the beginner?

I'd like to hit 3.8 ghz completely stable.

Q6700 yeah? Nice. I'm not sure if the 680i motherboard will allow you to do more without the pencil mod (USLatin correct me on that if I'm wrong).

I'm @ 3.6Ghz right now. 1.36v although I wish I had such low temps. Having that 10x multiplier must be killer.

As soon as I get my Enzo screw posts replaced I'm heading for 3.8Ghz m'self daily.

well he's got a x10 multi anyways so with the 367 that I hit on the P5N32-E SLI which is a cheaper Striker you'll be able to hit at least 3.67GHz though your Zalaman might not ba able to keep up

I'd go over to Overclock.net bro... Audi me and a few hundred guys will walk you thought the whole thing

Building an XP editing station (HDV) and would appreciate some input - thought I'd try this thread rather than starting a new one.

I'm planning on using 2 x 10k spin drives, one for OS/Applications and one for projects/cache, and 4 x 7.2k spin drives in RAID5 for media.
The motherboard must have onboard SATA RAID5 controller, Firewire and external SATA (Using 500GB eSATA Seagate FreeAgent Pro for backup/media).

This is what I had in mind:

Intel Core 2 Quadro Model Q6600 (2.4GHz), EM64T, 1066FSB, 8MB Cache

Asus P5B/PREMIUM/VISTA, Intel P965, Dual GLAN, 8 Channel Surround Audio, SATAII RAID, External SATA, Firewire, Dual PCI-Express, Dual DDR2-800, LGA775 - Core 2 Duo Supported

Kingston HyperX - 2x2048 MB DDR2, PC6400 DDR2-800, CAS 5-5-5-15 - KHX6400D2K2/4G

Inno3D GeForce 8800GTS, 640MB GDDR3, Dual DVI, TV-Out, HDTV, HDCP Ready, PCI-Express

2 x Western Digital Raptor 74 GB - Seriel ATA - SATA150 NCQ - 10000RPM/16MB

4 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 250,0 GB - SATAII-300 - 7200 RPM / 16MB

CoolerMaster CM Stacker 832, Maxitower, Aluminium, Multimedia Front, ATX & BTX Ready Case, Black

Hiper HPU-4M580 - M-Series, 580Watt, 20 db, 20/24 pins, 120mm Fan, Sleeve cables, Mesh Body Design, Temp. Auto Control

Zalman ZM-NBF47 North Bridge Chipset Cooler, No Fan

Questions...

Will I lose a slot using with this mobo/GFX combo? Which slot? Is there a mobo with a better layout that meets my requirements?

580W enough juice?

Intel stock cooler or ?

Not big on overclocking but might try to get a little extra for my money ;)

Any help is greatly appreciated!
