Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

centurion 5 is a girly case, made of aluminum. you need something made of steel, that you can run over with a car, like the antec 900.
just kidding.

if you don't mind, i'd love to see some benchmarks comparing the q6600 with the e6600 when you get it. is there a substantial dropoff in performance or does it hold up fairly well?

I have that case.

My temps are great. Around 35c at load. I just have something wrong with my BIOS. Slight adjustments give me "overclock error" and it's much harder than I thought it'd be. BTW the best overclock I've seen was 4.0 with the e4300.

Supposedly Intel started making the e4300 worse once people started buying it instead of the E6600 because they could overclock them to the same speed.

Hey guys sorry I forgot to check this thread.

My current overclock is 2.9. I overclocked the RAM, voltages, FSB and everything.

I have an Asus P5K motherboard. I need to find some BIOS profiles of people that also have a similar set-up and try those out but I can't find any.

there is a system of trial and error that is the only way to OC... even if you got someone else qith an awsome OC and exact setup you still want to do it this way cause no two chips are equal... (ram CPU, GPU... al of them)

gimme a minute to eat something and I'll try to give you the guide...

BTW... got money down on a Q6600 with first-dibs setpping reservation with Tank Guys who are pre-ordering next week :)

how much is it going to cost you?

Premium over the MSRP.

Q3 Penryn Sockets, though. Think that's going to make me stay away from G0 Quad Cores and wait to jump on the 4Ghz+ 12mb Cache Penryn Ship.

What kinda fan you got on it? Stock? Overclocked?
60c load is definitely not abnormal for a Quad Core and the Q6600 is rated to 62c. That's also generally "underated" as I've been told, so up to 70c is okay though pushing it. Mid sixties is where you want to start cutting back.

I got a thermaltek taifoonnn....not sure of the spelling. Thanks so much for the info. If i push it to 3.4 i get to about 68 or 69.....so all is fine. Should be better in winter now is so hot! Would you mind if i pm'd you regarding alternative os?

As in Penryn is slated for Quarter 3 release.

When I say above MSRP I meant paying TankGuys premium for G0 stepping.

Jared - Hey! As long as you get what I'm saying. xD

No, they charge the same, as far as I know... they just facilitate choosing the stepping by checking their boxes for you... the trick is getting one before the good ones are gone

I guess I could say my setup went flawlessly too... but I am not done yet... but neither are you...

You're right. I figured they'd charge a little more. Glad to have one reserved and on such a short list at that!

I had my setup just fine, just unsatisfied it seems. And STILL won't be satisified til Penryn Quad. lol

Upgrades/changes:
Enzotech Northbridge Cooling
Enzotech Southbridge Cooling
4gb of Ballistix DDR2-1066
E6600 CPU
Silverstone Fm121 120mm Fan
Gigabyte p35 DS3p Motherboard (ALready have this)

Kholi, how much faster do you think your new quad will be over your old one? The way you talked about your old one made it sound incredible.

It produced, that's for sure! And that was at 3.0ghz. I'm looking for 3.6ghz on AiR and if I'm lucky? 3.8ghz. =D At about 3.8ghz I should see some seriously low render times, and that of course is the objective.

Penryn? 12mb Shared L2? Something like 4ghz and that'll be me last CPU for a while.

I'm gonna try to get 3.8 - 4ghz out of this Core 2 Duo E6600. Will keep ya informed.

I saw somewhere that somebody got 5.0 out of his E6600 by cooling with dry ice.

A 3.8ghz quad core would be ridiculous. Does FCP use all cores when rendering or just 2? I wish Vegas would use all cores in timeline editing.

i said all along you should get the e6600. now you're stealing my idea about getting the ballistix ram. what's up with that? so do you notice a difference between the crucial and the gskill?
