Here is the HDtach read on the Baby-Blue esternal by Thecus found on Newegg for $130 with two Seagate 7200.10 320GBs in it on RAID1 through the eSATA card that comes in the package and I must say that the numbers are quite pathetic... a single drive will do 68MB/s and a RAID1 should be every little bit as fast as a single drive... however I still managed to barely get 50
I asked Jason to bench his Puke Green so we can compare, of course if he benches only RAID0 I'll set mine up and bench it like so.
Also, I got my 3rd and 4th sticks of HZ and they are in there already, sleeping till I go 64-bit... lol... but they do seem stable at the 4-4-4-12-1T 950MHz so now I can forget about RAM for a looong time... knock on wood!
I'm building up my list of parts to get at Newegg - and am wondering if it would be okay for me to put the screengrab of the parts there and get some feedback? I intend to follow in the footsteps of Kholi once he's completed (tomorrow, RIGHT? )
Also, I'm considering getting the E6600 (dual core) chip and then getting the quad core chip (native or not?) when it drops down to comprable price this fall. Can I do this with the same gigabyte mobo?
I haven't geeked out on this stuff in so long - its been 6 years, and MAN have things changed in hardware!
Your plan seems great! The E6600 is the best deal now, go for it! I've seen an E6600 at 3.78 with a Zalaman 110mm and a Silverstone 750W wich is a very nice PSU but no need for the four 12V rails unless you want to SLI GTX's lol
that was on my board though the ASUS P5N32-E SLI which is a great board for us cause you can RAID and get super fast speeds so you save $130 on a controller, plus you get the extra slot for a cheap $40 video card so you can have 3 monitors eventually...
But the DS3 is also solid and amazing, and it will also clock high with the E6600!
I don't see why not as long as your parts are similar and all, I mean here I am talking about my ram and external enclosure and all, but it makes sense cause he's got the same stuff... I mean this is evolving into a super nice building thread concerning several of the best deals that editors would benefit from... but Kholi is the man here, even if can't build fast, ROFL... j/k that PC is coming together man!
Meanwhile, will the new yorkfield (sp?) quad-native processors coming in fall be compatible with this mobo? Just wondering what the lifespan of this motherboard will be.
I'll bench mine when I get back to my lappy in a couple of days, Latin. My drives are about 60-70 percent full right now, so we will see.
I also have to add, that I am not using the eSATA card that came with the enclosure. I'm using an expresscard eSATA adapter on my laptop. Which is actually only capable of 2.5 Gb/s, so I can't even take full advantage of the HDD's throughput.
We shall see, though. All's I know is that it's fast enough to handle multiple streams of DVCPRO HD in EDIUS without a hitch.
It looks excellent, only thing is if you have a nice exhaust fan to suck out the air being blown by the Zalaman... (I had one and they are nice, but TT is slightly cooler for same cash)
Also, try to find posts of people actually reporting their OCs on any Duo chips and if they get 'em high then go for the PSu if you feel comfortable... the better the PSU the better the OC...
Seems nice, I sure wish I had an E6600!
Jason,
Cool man, thanks, I really want to see what you get out of them but if you have it as a RAID0 no worries... let it chill, I'll use it a bit more and just make up my mind... does it get hot? I mean did you try opening the box and feeling the HDDs? And did you take the little jumpers off the HDDs?
Ive got the pretty much the same case as Kholi dual cores, but AMD 2.2s overclocked to 2.4s (and I don't wanna hear how they get spanked by Intel, I know they do), here on my video computer, and a fairly similar setup. I have 2 250G Seagate Barracudas in a SATA raid, and I have had no trouble at all in over two years. None.
I also have the CPU heatsink dillont listed on my audio computer, and it is HUGE. But with some adjustable speed fans, the thing runs very, very quiet. That heatsink is awesome, worth every penny.
The case on my video computer is surprisingly loud with factory fans, something I need to address.
Newegg rocks. I just got a Cooler Master external drive enclosure for 30 bucks (yeah i know kinda pricey), because I had an extra 80 gig hard drive from my old computer. External enclosures are the schnizzle. I wouldn't advise ever buying an outright external hard drive, you can get a much better deal get the enclosure and drive sperately and taking 10 mins to put it together.
I'm a little surprised you guys went with Gigabyte boards, and memory that wasn't Corsair. I've had problems with Gigabyte boards, and prefer ASUS, and Corsair memory is the best.
Nice systems, the both of them. And at a good price. I was lucky enough to buy my power supply, Asus A8V motherboard, old processor (single core AMD 2.4) and Nvidia 6800 Ultra from a friend for 500, and that saved me some money. I think I paid 900 for the whole setup, excluding the things I got from my tech buddy, and exluding the CPU upgrade which was for around $250 when I bought it on sale (from newegg of course).
Pretty good! I'm almost at a stable 3.0ghz with decent temps! I want to get the hardware where I want it to be before I do the... other part. I got time so it's cool.
Hopefully I'll begin that certain experiment today, though.
I have no idea where to get access to some of the installation software I'll need to have in order to do what you're doing. I know there are torrents and such, but everytime I look for one, I'm not sure which one to get. Blah!
I'm so crazy on getting a new computer/upgrade as soon as possible, I've been considering just eating it and buying a mac pro quad ... so I can't wait to see what you've done!
