Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

hey Ugafan... when r u building? After Q3 prices hit?

i'm trying to hold out till then. right now all i have is one monitor, a raptor hard drive and another 500gb drive. although i think i'll be getting some ram soon as i'm worried the price will creep back up.

RAM will never creep up... RAM will continue to drop for at least an other 10 years...

you can take that to the bank... if prices creep up it is only momentary and only about $20... momentary as in they dropp back down and even past the original mart in less than 2 months guaranteed...

Same goes for HDDs

I'd get some G-Skill 800's right now only if you are worried about them switching the components... I got those puppies completely rock solid stable up to 4-4-4-12-2T @ 1100MHz but I am running them at 4-4-4-12-1T @ 950MHz because they are actually faster that way... I belive you can get a pair for $80 at the Egg

I agree with you... we have to wait and see... BTW the E4300 rocks... I actually found a guy that clocked one to a ludicrous 3.7GHz!!! now THAT is the best buy ... sorta...

I am hoping the Q6600 revision will be sold at the same price since the stepping is not specified when re-sellers buy from Intel... now you can go to TankGuys and they'll tell you what stepping they have and if they can they'll give you what you request from them... I already talked to them about putting money down to get first dibbs on the QT3 Q6600s...

have you heard specifics about pricing?

I think everyone contacted them about G0 Stepping Q6600's. =P Good thing I want a QX6850 and that unlocked Multi. If I can get a G0 Q66 then cool.

July needs to come by!

yea... hopefully they'll remember I asked about 2 months ago...

Ugafan, I keep saying G.Skill because it is proven to OC like crazy... nobody has problems with it and it is arguably the best bargain out there period... can't go wrong with it... I even got the second pair just to be safe in case they replaced the modules on them so I have them for when I get Vista and Vegas 8.0

Kholi will tell you that you can't go wrong... now I am affraid to tell you one way or an other about other memory because I'd have to research on OC forums about other people's experience and double check that their claims are proof as opposed to simply claims...

however... those are very popular sticks... I know they are worth the money... especially so little of it!!! what a DEAL!!! but... I do know that the HZs are better... or so seems to be the consensus... so... if you can catch the G. Skills for $80 then I'g go that way... but if you want a deal for whatever great memory you can get your hands on... they I would say jumping on those RIGHT NOW (before the deal goes away) might in fact be the best thing to do for you!

nice deal!!!

but we might have to trash talk eachother if you get those :)
HZ are still king :D

not a problem.. just a different version of the Q6600 chip that is being put out soon which should require lower voltages and handle higher temps which should be an indicator of higher OC potential...

if anything the problem will be getting your hands on one of them due to popularity

Thanks, I got the q6600 already. It just got me worried i bought a lemon. I got it to 3.4 stable..... I does get pretty hot tought so now im down to 3.2. Im using a thermaltake bi typhoon. I was thinking of moving to water cooling but it looks very expensive....
Thanks a lot for the info.
BTW Kholi have you ever considered a 4u rackmount case? I switched to those since already had a rack for them because of my audio equipment. You have much room inside and its good for ventilation.

Hey Pierre,

I actually went with the Centurion for portability. It's a smaller ATX case, one of the more reasonable sized cases, and something I could definitely port on set and will be doing very very soon.

I also sold my Q6600. I was able to get 3.6ghz out of it with my board, I know that Asus boards are having much more luck than Gigabytes with Quads so that's something to look into.

I ended up ordering an E6600 in a fit to prove that my cooler, the Enzotech Ultra-X, might be better than all of the rest, even more so with w Silverstone 120mm fan mated to it. And, I think I might actually KEEP the E6600 until Penryn is released instead of going to a G0 Stepping Quad Core.

Remains to be seen.

Glad ya got your Quad!

I see what you mean about portable. I used to do recording studio work and i always dreamed of a computer roadcase with somekind of lid with an lcd and another with mouse and keyboard. Just plug it in and voila...
i love my quad, its like the hvx it blows me away everytime i use it.
I found the Enzotech Ultra-X at my store i might pull the trigger when i get my next pay check.

Centurion 5, still. Doubt I'll ever go to another one. Really love the case and it's simple look.

I would LOVE to get a G5 Case, though. Even though it's heavy as heck, they're nice!

centurion 5 is a girly case, made of aluminum. you need something made of steel, that you can run over with a car, like the antec 900.
just kidding.

if you don't mind, i'd love to see some benchmarks comparing the q6600 with the e6600 when you get it. is there a substantial dropoff in performance or does it hold up fairly well?

I'll let ya know what my Geekbench results are OC'd to the same thing. I saved my GEekbench reports to the desktop.

I got a feeling that in Cinebench or Cinema 4D, E6600 is gonna lag even at the same OverClock.

Nah. I'm Final Cut Pro and there aren't any REAL benchmarks for Editing platforms. It's mostly just comparing and contrasting user experience.

Hey guys sorry I forgot to check this thread.

My current overclock is 2.9. I overclocked the RAM, voltages, FSB and everything.

I have an Asus P5K motherboard. I need to find some BIOS profiles of people that also have a similar set-up and try those out but I can't find any.
