Copy speeds for P2 Gear?

Anyone know the copy speeds for the P2 Gear using either FW400 or USB? Assuming a hard drive that can maximize the bandwidth of the interface.

Thanks!

P2 Gear Copying Times Test

P2 Gear Copying Times Test

I have not conducted any systematic tests but I can share an experience.

I just copied a full 32GB P2 Card (1080/25p footage) directly from the HPG10 onto a common ATA 250GB hard drive - I forgot how fast it was, but it was just a cheap disk - via USB 2.0 (the disk had to be properly formatted by the HPG10 first as always). I cannot at the moment also test a firewire 400 connection because I don't have a suitable FW disk available for Type S formatting.

The first copying operation (which includes a verification pass) took circa 58 minutes. I copied the same material again, without verification this time, and this run took circa 28 minutes.

So I must admit that, utterly delighted though I am with the HPG10, the copying still takes quite some time. This should not be a surprise - a lot of data has to pass through a USB cable. Personally, I am not at all disappointed. The HPG10 plays an integral part in our P2 workflow both in the field and in post-production (and we hope to also archive our footage on disk in such a way that we can use the HPG10 to reconstruct P2 cards so we can digitize the footage directly on playout - but I am digressing).

I timed two methods. Using a 32G card in the Panasonic 2 card reader, I was able to dump to a USB drive in 24 minutes without "Verify" and in 58 minutes with "Verify"

Copy speeds from the HPG 10 to a drive is very dependant on the drive. I've copied 16 GB cards to a HPG formatted 3.5" format drive in 9 minutes and 10 seconds with out verify over USB 2 with the HPG in USB host mode. Copying the same card to to a OTG drive via usb 2 similarly formatted, can take 13 minutes and some seconds.

Everything in the chain makes a difference but the drive really does matter.

Thanks guys! Very helpful info. I think the only think keeping me from getting a P2 Gear is the lack of support for AVCIntra (I plan to get a HPX 2700 and will be shooting AVCIntra most of the time). Hopefully by the time this camera comes out there will be a new P2 Gear that supports Intra.
