Coollights LED

Nice review Dan,

How did you mount the spot LED to the chimera?

Thanks.

Hiya:

Not mounted, just put the Chimera on its own C-stand. I am looking into fabricating my own speedring out of the barndoor mounting ring, will keep you guys updated as soon as I can find someone local who welds.

Thanks,

Dan

For those of you thinking about mounting these lights in obscure ways, with the barndoors, I am getting a weight of 5.1 pounds.

What would the equivalent output be in to tungsten-Watts? Equivalent to a 300 Watt tungsten fixture? 600?

Richard,

I don't think I'll have any problems if I have a clear plastic "slip cover" with the bottom open to let airflow in, maybe 12 inches longer than the fixture. Gravity won't allow water in it. What are your thoughts? It would save me from vaccum sealing them althouh I am going to do that to one and throw it in a pool to see how it works for a fast run n' gun light in 10 feet of water.

EDIT: Or I'll ask Dan to do that to one :)

Missed that. To be fair though, after seeing the picture I was likely drooling through my eyeballs.

Just remember, the natural airflow is from bottom to top, therefore that creates a situation where heat is building up in the top of your vacuum bag and won't naturally circulate out since heat does rise. If there is enough air movement that day outside, you may be okay but tests need to be run to see how it goes. There probably is an ideal way to do it but I bet its not easy and requires a bit more engineering.

How well it works underwater is a function of how long you keep it sealed, how well its sealed, how much light is coming in from the water top, etc. At night, it would work super well. During the day, perhaps not as great.

We have another review to post that compared our unit, the Kelvin Tile and Litepanels 1x1. This from one of our customers in Scotland that took delivery in early January of a couple of the 5600K flood panels and an LEDHBAR accessory to allow putting both of them on a stand. So for all those that were interested in how we came out from an early customer, you can find it here:

Currently its looking like shipping of the LED600 will begin in the USA during the week of February 16th. Pre-selling is still going on now and those that bought/reserved in advance will of course get the first shipping.

Hi Richard...

How do we place the order?

I tried doing this online. But at the point where I select my shipping preference and click "continue" I get sent back to the first step of selecting quantity.

I was trying to pre-order two 5600k floods.

Hi Dean,

We never open up online ordering for a new or out of stock product until its in stock to avoid misunderstandings about when something will ship. I always open up a pre-order period where I handle the transactions manually through email/phone for about a month before the product comes in. We are in that period now. You can either call our toll free number 877-272-1419 or we can handle most of it through emails to info@coollights.biz. Otherwise, on the first day we start actually shipping we will enable the online ordering on the site. Hope this helps.

I am liking my spot too! It's nice to have choices when lighting. But we really want the Cool Lights LED 250, that is what is really needed. Can't wait to see what you will have up your sleeve next.

Got mine today and they are GREAT! Nice product, Richard!

Gotta hear more than that! Give us some reasons why they are great (other than they come from Richard which is obvious).

Show some pictures and rant on about them at least a little bit!

I'll be using a couple of them in a few scenes on a film I'm shooting in Mar/Apr. I'll post some stills afterward...

Posting this to "both lists" since there is often not overlap between the two.

Took lights today to my local supply dealer, Kennedys ENG in Euless (TX). We put the Coollight up against a LitePanels 1x1. It is not a totally accurate comparison since we first were just eyeballing the differences and secondly Kennedy's only had a 5600K spot.

Construction of the Coollights compares very favorably to the $1600 LitePanels. One thing we did notice when standing in front of the two lights is that the Coollight 5600K flood did have a slightly more greenish tinge than the LitePanels 5600K spot. We added a sheet of -1/2 green (as Richard had suggested in order to match the LED's with the fluos) and at least visually, the two appeared identical. So, I bought a couple of sheets of minus 1/2 green and will continue to test with and without the gels.

Since I've already concluded that 1/2CTO provides decent tungsten matching and I will possibly be using the magenta gels often, my first suggestion to Richard is to consider a filter holder of some sort.

But the few people who saw the product in the store really were impressed with the output.

I continue to be impressed....

Got my LED600 flood 5600k today. Double box shipping was nice. This thing puts out a lot more light than I expected, so it's good that individual banks can be turned off or dimmed overall. I'll try using it tomorrow on some interviews along with a Diva light and some small peppers/inkies
It's powerful enough that 216 or other diffusion material can be clipped onto the doors. What really appealed to me was that it can run off 12v camera batteries unlike the 1x1 litepanel that needs 24v. I have an ample supply of Anton Bauer batts that power camera, monitor and now the 600.
Construction seems robust but I'm concerned there is no glass/plastic to protect the LED bulbs from getting damaged. I may look into sliding a sheet of acrylic plastic into the barndoor frame.
Not sure if that affects ventilation of the led's but Richard will tell us.
Also what happens while running on battery and the power cable is plugged in? does the DC power supply overide the batt or does it blow up?
Unit comes with a handy shoulder bag, but I haven't decided how I'll transport it yet with the rest of my lighting kit.The folding Barndoors do a good job of protecting the leds when not in use.
Initially it was difficult to attach the light to a standard 5/8" stand, but after scraping some excess black paint from the receptacle it fit ok.

I may have to order a 5600k spot when they become available. It could make a good backlight/hairlight and compliment the flood version.
