Check out our latest project: "Conviction." Directed by Nicholas LaVelle, starring Michael Soule, Kenny Jame James, Karl Koeling, and Jason Krotky. Shot in 12 hours in an abandoned warehouse in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. Shot with the Brevis 35mm adapter.

Thanks for looking!

great work, loved the transitions.... that adaptor really pushes the dvx past excellence!

thought the acting could have been better, but i know how that goes, trust me haha

Oh boy. Really, you can't use such well known music, except under very rare circumstances. Also, shower + murder + drain + blood = humongous cliche. DP work is competent... though not exactly anything special mood-wise. Good start, technically, but now you gotta move your game forward; stand out from the crowd - make your film something more, better, something we haven't seen before... in other words, needs more horsecock. Again, good start.

I agree, the cliche`-o-meter was off the charts. Some of the lines and images were laughable.

But the look is good. The actors all "looked" pretty good, but some of the lines were just bad.

With better decision making you'll have a rad film.

Very nice looking film!
It seemed a little odd that he would attempt to strangle a sleeping man with his wife lying next to him and not expect her to wake up.

Other than that it was pretty good. Gotta love the Brevis.

That was pretty darn good, actually. I liked it - i echo the comment about the music, but it fit the show well anyway. My favourite part was the transitions. They were really really slick. Would love to know more about the production!

This looked really good. Was it shot with the DVX? The transitions were great, they reminded me a lot of something you would see on a TV show.

Thanks for all the feedback. We didn't know about using classical music, which seemed like muddy water in terms of copyrights and public domain and stuff. Shows what we know, eh?

This particular scene was actually shot on the HD100u. I shoot a lot with my DVX, but this DP wanted to shoot on his own camera.

Is there anything else we could've improved on? We were the DP and gaffer for the show, so any critiques/comments about the cinematography would be helpful. Thanks!

You shot that on a JVC HD100u? If so, im getting on of those babies next week.

I did however love the cinematic look to it. Can i ask. What NLE program did you use.
Also what type of budget did you have when making this?

Cheers,
Nathaniel

We used FCP 6 to edit, Motion for the one shot, and Color to CC. We had a 0$ budget for this. We call these "light clubs," just a bunch of filmmakers hanging out to shoot something. They've transformed into more like short films, but without the weeks of prep or full crew. It's more of a "let's film some cool shots with a hitman" that transforms into somewhat of a story.

We bought new fog juice (40$) which didn't work. Don't ever buy Rosco's Studio and Stage fog juice, if you want there to be haze/atmosphere. That stuff is meant to dissipate. Gotta buy "Rosco Fog" (the green stuff) to get the good light beams (which we didn't get, unfortunately).

We bought props (gloves, blood, wife beater, suspenders) and bought 2 meals, and that was our budget. We borrowed all the lights and dolly.

No one's mentioned anything about the totally unmotivated red cloud of smoke in the 2nd shot. Light beams? Hardly...live and learn, I guess.
