Converting Progressive NTSC to PAL

I would like to shoot some progressive footage for a documentary that also contains all kinds of other footage. Documentary will be later transferred to PAL when finished.
That is, the 24p or 30p footage will be edited in 60i timeline along with other footage, then output as 60i, and then transferred to PAL.
In other words, I will not be extracting 24 true frames for PAl transfer.
Does anyone know of any issues with converting 24p or 30p to 60i and then to PAL?

Re: Converting Progressive NTSC to PAL

24p and 30p are converted to 60i before they ever get to tape. When you import them, you import them as 60i. You don't need to do anything but capture.

Pretty much any prosumer level or higher NLE will convert NTSC to PAL at output.

Re: Converting Progressive NTSC to PAL

Thank you, but that's not my question.
I am well aware that as I shoot in 24p the footage is being recorded as 60i with a 3:2 pulldown.
My question is - will 3:2 pulldown in 60i will cause motion artifacts or any other kind of problems when transferred to PAL?
By the way, I wouldn't advise using NLE's ability to output NTSC as PAL. Have you ever tried it? It's crap, absolutely not acceptable for broadcast. Nevermind if it was oroginated in 24p or 60i.

Re: Converting Progressive NTSC to PAL

For a PAL transfer of 3:2 pulldown, 24P originated footage, you'd likely remove the pulldown first, to get the native 24 frames, and then play them at 25 frames per second. This would get you quite a good PAL version.

You'd have a big problem if you were shooting in 30P, it doesn't transfer well at all to PAL - but if you had 24P footage in 60i, you'd just make it 24P again, and then alter the speed to 25fps

Re: Converting Progressive NTSC to PAL

Thank you Mike. The problem is - I don't have an option of removing the 3:2 pulldown because the project will be only transferred to PAL as a whole, and it will consist of 24p AND 60i originated footage, so obviously I can't apply 3:2 pulldown to the whole project.
Do you know exactly why 30p does not transfer well to PAL?

Re: Converting Progressive NTSC to PAL

It doesn't transfer well before 30p doesn't really "fit" into 60i. 24p can be easily sped up to 25p, 60i can be turned to 24p then to 25p, and I think 60i can even go to 50i without too much pain, but there's no way to fit 30 frames into either 50 or 25 frames without really weird issues arising.

I think you'll have to reverse telecine the 24p segments, unfortunately. Or you could magic bullet the 60i segments as well and have the whole thing be 24p native....

It's a tough situations to be in.

Re: Converting Progressive NTSC to PAL

It is a tough situation - but it does look like you'd need to make a 24P master of the whole thing, and then convert that to 25P (or 50i).

It'll take a while to do, most likely, with rendering and such - but that's unfortunately what would need to be done... :-/
