Converting 1080p 25 to 720p 25?

Considering adding the 550d to my setup as a B camera...

I shoot on the hmc151 in 720p 25 for most of my work, and 720p 50 for all slow-mo, overcranking etc.

So logically, I would need to be shooting at 25 frames with the 550d in order to use it in my setup....this is where the problems come in as of course the 550d cannot shoot 720p 25 frames.

What are the possible work arounds for this? Theres loads of you guys mixing the footage from video and dlsr cams, but having not had any previous interest in the dlsr world I am totally uneducated as how to tackle this problem.

I would generally like to stay shooting at 720 as I do alot of overcranking and such and the two 720 frame modes work great for that.

Cheers

Also... If I was shooting at 1080 25p and wanted to do some over cranking... would the 1080 50i be good for that or not? What should I use?

Cheers

What editor are you using?

In most, dropping footage of the same frame rate, but different sizes is a non-issue. It scales it to whatever your project size is. Some do this well, some don't. As for mixing different frame rates, some editors handle that well, others don't.

And I wouldn't recommend shooting interlaced unless you were building an interlaced project.

It's possible with 1080i50 , but it needs to be deinterlaced (double rate deinterlaced) to 1080p50 then resized to 720p50 (if using 720p25 timeline)

The quality of deinterlacing is depending on what algorithms are used. Most NLE's use very poor quality methods, and you either get ghosting (blend deinterlace) or aliasing (jaggies). Higher quality algorithms are very CPU intensive (i.e. SLOW)

Some people choose to use 720p50 upscaled instead (perhaps from a different camera), but it will usually look softer than the native 1080p25 footage of course

And others use the TM-700 Panasonic consumer model, which can shoot 1080p50 and is only ~$1K

Sorry guys I use Premiere.

As I said I use the hmc 151 and 720 25/50 as that works pretty good. However if I was to add the 550d (which id really like to do), Id probably have to shoot in 1080?

What happens if I shoot on the 550d in 1080 25p and drop it onto my 720p 25 avchd timeline?

The native behaviour is to keep the 1920x1080 frame size in the 1280x720 sequence

You can right click the video in the timeline and select scale to frame size

or

You can change default behaviour in the preferences to "default scale to frame size"

I think you will get red render bar, because it doesn't match the sequence settings

This doesn't matter, as long as you get real time performance (In CS5 with MPE enabled , you should if you have a decent system)

it just dosnt seem like these 2 kids really want to play together :(

Sure, you can make them, but is it worth the hassle? Is there anything more suitable out there to bunk up with the hmc?

Another HMC151 ? :)

Even the color will match extraordinarily well without extra effort in post :)

There was a price drop mentioned in the news section

haha well this is true!

I suppose if I want this good quality and bokeh at such a low price I need to accept a few problems, huh?

What are the best ways to integrate hdslr into the setup? Im starting to think maybe with my needs its just not for me.

I need to shoot both 25 frames and 50 frames at the same resolution for all my slowmo and over cranking. Or is there a better way to do this?
Which means im gna want to be shooting at 25 frames on the hdslr.

Is there a way to get this going or am I barking up a particularly tall and diificult tree to climb?

Man, what are you after? If you want to use a DSLR with your HMC, do it. Plenty of people do. People use them with RED, use them with Sonys, use them with whatever. So you have to change a setting in your NLE, big deal. It's not like you have to create a DPX sequence and bring that in... Heck, transcode the footage OUTSIDE of Premiere to 720/25p if it's that big a deal.

Sometimes, you have expend some effort to get things to work together. That goes for shooting on $800 DSLRs or $100k 35mm film cameras.

Please don't confuse my lack of knowledge with being difficult or lazy my friend!

This is big bucks for me, and checking as thoroughly as to potential problems, fix arounds

So if I click a button and get the 1080 25 footage to convert to 720 in prem...what then? no problems or other events cropping up? Are we plain sailing from there?

Yes, no problems doing it that way. All it's doing is progressive resizing, there are no standards conversion or anything to cause issues (with FPS or formats etc...)

Ok so I just did a quick export of some 1080 25p footage after letting prem convert it to 720p on the timeline. Looks ok. Seems like this is the perfect workflow for me to do this.

I had a look through preferences but couldnt seem to find it.... Where abouts is the option to have premiere change this automatically for me? Then ill be out of your hair!

This is editing. NOTHING is plain sailing. EVER. James Cameron spent $300M on Avatar and you can bet they had problems EVERY DAY in the edit room. Will what you are wanting to do work? Yes. Will you need to jump through some hoops? Yes. Just like everyone else from the guy making movies in his basement, to the guy making movies like Batman. You do what you need to do to get the job done. Everyone does.

You have this community and dozens of others if you run into issues. You've got guys here who work in Hollywood, and guys here just getting started. You'll get all the help you could want.

I think it's edit=>preferences=>general

(My computer with PP is busy right now, I can check for you later once it's done rendering)

Sure thing man, but thats part of the beauty of it from my opinion.... creating a clean path to sail through the chaos!

I had a lot of frustration in finding a workflow, but got it nailed down. I didnt want to go steaming in and buy a cam thats just not going to do the things I want it to do. Im on a limited budget, whatever I buy HAS to work for me.

Im sure you guys find it frustrating as hell, but if it means anything to you I REALLY do appreciate any help.

Thanks guys

On the contrary. I love helping people. Most of the time. The only thing that frustrates me in helping people, is those who won't help themselves.

I was a little short with you and that probably came out wrong. I apologize. My patience for today ran out about 3 hours ago. I am knee deep in reformating a 45 page "script" that was written by someone with zero film experience and did absolutely EVERYTHING wrong, and in order to edit this film, I've got to re-format every character, every line of dialog, every "script note" that should have been either action items, or shots, or parentheticals, etc. It's painstaking, frustrating, and I am trying to work on a deadline doing stuff that someone else slacked on 8 months ago. I need to be cutting, and I am playing around in Celtx.

So, my apologies.

No need for apologies mate, this isnt the first time you've come to my aid.

I literally give myself migraines from attempting to sort through all this stuff. My passion for film unfortunately far surpasses my knowledge, but I am learning - thanks in a large part to guys like you! I am currently at university in my 3rd year of a film course. My lecturers have quite literally taught me nothing, I dont believe they actually know anything themselves... Which is why I end up on forums.
