F5: Convergent Design ups the ante. Two Free 256GB SSD's with Odyssey 7Q+ purchase

I'm not sure if the FS7 has the true 4K output over HDMI enabled yet, but I do know it is part of the spec so if not it will be coming soon.

The SATA connection is standard although we have found some SATA adapters are not as good as others. Don't know about that one off the top of my head. Shoot a test and see if it works. We offer a basic one for $35 if it doesn't. Make sure you go USB 3 or Thunderbolt, otherwise you'll be downloading forever.

It's interesting. One or more of Juan's replies to me indicated the 4K over HDMI but he has not confirmed. I hope it's true. I suspect if it is true it will come with the update that gives us 4K internal.

As for the SATA issue, I will check but I am pretty sure my dock is SATA3.

Really looking forward to taking advantage of what the 7Q+ has to offer.

Thanks,
Robert

Hello Folks,

As my 7Q+ should be here tomorrow, I have been reading the manual.

In the Release Notes for the latest firmware under KNOWN ISSUES in the Monitor subsection it says:

"FS7 Cine S-Log3 / S-Log2 not currently supported."

S'Cuse me?

If I record Cine EI S-Log3 I get a black screen or what?

In any case how could this be realeased firmware? I understand many of the particulars having worked for Microsoft in Premier Support and at Compaq testing pre-released notebooks, but some things should be considered showstoppers and the product (firmware in this case) should not ship until the issue is corrected.

I would appreciate any enlightenment on this issue.

Y'all be safe,
Robert

There's a thread on this with pictures. The 7Q 4K Pro-Res has a pretty crushed curve right now. Mitch says it's still gradeable, but for me, it's not really useable. Right now, I have the back unit but it's basically a $2000 battery holder :( I'm actually really bummed about this as I have one of my better network shoots tomorrow and the first thing the DIT guy asked me was, can the FS7 shoot 4K Pro-Res (he was really hoping so)? I said no, there's a firmware glitch :( We have to shoot XAVC. DIT guys like.... What's that? Is it hard to deal with?

I just can't give the client the 7Q images as is right now. It's just not S-Log.

Convergent gave me a date of February for the fix, but we all know how dates are to Convergent. I hope they prove me wrong.

Also, I'm wondering how CD is going to deal with Metadata from CineEI? I guess it's not a huge deal if it's not there, I just want an S-Log image.

Edit: Here's the thread with pics

Can you be more specific? is this the purple issue? When you say crushed what do you mean?

What about 1080p S-log3?

This borders on the unbelievable.

Thanks,
Robert

purple issue is another issue. Just look at these pics and you'll see what I mean.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread...the-Odyssey-7Q

You can record HD to the 7Q from the built in SDI ports, which is great for a backup / safety copy, but it's only HD and I don't believe high frame rates either.

I did a pixel peep test between the internal XAVC and the recorded Pro-Res. Doing a very extreme grade (something you would never do), the XAVC held up noticeably better with less blocking than the Pro-Res. I was very surprised.

I think when CD gets it sorted it will be good, but it's a wait for now.

So that does not seem to be what the KNOWN ISSUES note is referring to as the note is under the Monitor section not recording.

I will check the thread you reference but my question remains, what do I see on the 7Q+ as I am recording 1080p from the SDI or HDMI using Slog3/S-Gamut3Cine in CineEI mode from the camera with no XDCA?.

Maybe in the AM our buddy Mitch will weigh in.

Thanks Again,
Robert

What the Release Notes are referring to is that the current firmware supports recording in S-Log3, but not S-Log3cine or S-Log2. Unfortunately, information between Sony in Japan and Convergent Design in the US can have translation issues, and it appears that we were given some improper specs for S-Log3 while not receiving anything at the time for S-Log3cine or what was then an unreleased FS7 S-Log2. We are in communication with Sony and have taken to doing our own curve mapping rather than rely on Sony's numbers. All will be corrected in the next firmware, but for now the ProRes recording appears slightly more contrasty than an S-Log3 should. This is a separate issue from the RAW recording, which in some workflows is registering magenta.

If you have an Odyssey7Q+, you can use the HDMI output of the camera to feed a video signal (in REC709, Sl-log3, or whatever you want) in 4K or UHD to the Odyssey7Q+. This is a functional workaround for now.

So SLog3 is a gamma curve and S-Gamut3.Cine (is that what you meant instead of S-Log3cine?) is a color space. So I am thinking what you wrote does not make sense. Are you saying the Odysseys can record SLog3 but not correctly with the S-Gamut3.Cine color space?

Folks seem to not be understanding the difference between the curves and the color spaces although I believe Ned S. tried to explain them in at least one thread.

And yes, as you and I have discussed, I plan to take advantage of the HDMI although the 8bit limit annoys me. Sony needs to give us 4k (4096)/10 bit/422 over SDI without the XDCA and the Odysseys need to record that to ProRes HQ or preferebly in my case DNXHR. I am one of those dang Avid users;-)

And BTW, neither I nor the KNOWN ISSUES section I quoted mentioned 4K. Another poster did that.

Y'all be cool,
Robert

To clarify, in Cine EI mode, Sgamma3 can be selected. The available selections for LUTs then are S-Log2, S-Log3 and S-Log3.cine. We currently support S-Log3 only. We will add the others soon.

hmmmm....something's wrong with this picture. There are 2 gamma's available, slog2 and slog3; and, 3 colorspaces available, sgammut2, sgammut3, and sgammut3.cine. Are you saying, Mitch, that C-D is using a different LUT for slog3, depending on whether the gammut is sgammut3 or sgammut3.cine? That doesn't make sense to me.

I'll ned to go over this with the engineers. I don't have the camera here so I'm unfortunately playing go-between with this information right now. Sorry if anything is getting lost in translation. It's likely me.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for the updates. Just to clarify, most people (I would think anyways), would want Cine EI / S-Gamut3.Cine / SLog3 to work with the 7Q since that's what Sony markets as their "Cine" mode and the best they offer.

I ordered a 7Q+ last week and was told it was back ordered. However Just showed up from B&H with the same order...?.... No complaints. :)

Hi Mitch, I'm trying to find an authorized dealer in EU that offers the 2 free ssd 7Q+ package and can't find one!
Is this offer is limited to the US only!?
Thanks

OK I bought the 7Q+ with the 2 cards. Great - I'm really excited . Then it dawns on me that I need a SATA to USB 3.0 or or thunderbolt adapter to download files! Is that correct?
Am I missing something here ? So I just ordered a "
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Cable USB 3.0 - STAE104
- hope that's right.

RANT:
Shouldn't this be bundled with the recorder or at least make it quite plain to purchasers that they need to buy something else. It's not listed with accessories at B&H so you need to search to even find it.. And what about the thunderbolt adapter? so far I don't see it listed anywhere. I planned to use the recorder this week but now I have to order something and B&H will be knee deep in snow. This has taken me well over an hour to figure out. Atomos just puts in the box and at $2300 .....

This reminds of when I bought the 7Q only to find you couldn't activate it without buying a drive.
I'm sorry to rant - it is a great device - Am I off base here? Should I have known this?

Lenny
