F5: Convergent Design ups the ante. Two Free 256GB SSD's with Odyssey 7Q+ purchase

Dang y'all, I may be convinced to get a 7Q+.

It would be nice if someone would document what does and doesn't work without the XDCA.

Did someone say LUTS are not yet implemented? The description on B&H does mention LUTS.

Mitch, thanks for hanging in there with us. Others don't know (and hopefully you don't remember) that I have been harassing you elsewhere since before you started with Convergent Design.

Thanks,
Robert

There are some LUTs, only built-in ones, not custom 3D LUTs. Some of them are terrible, others may be ok. I mostly use FS700 and the built-in LUT CD uses for FS700 SLOG2 is pretty much completely useless, but I see there are LUTs for F3/F5/F55 that don't seem quite as terrible. 3D LUTs will be amazing but have been promised for a while and should come in a later firmware, it's just not clear when.

Is there a Slog3 to 709?

Robert

If you set the camera choice to F3/F5/F55 then there is an SLog3 LUT to 709. Looked OK to me though I wasn't carefully looking. It did transfer LUT to the SDI Out which the small HD for all its ballyhooed LUT choices doesn't do yet. I don't understand the issue with whether its a true 3D LUT . Like I said it looked good. I'll chack more carefully in the next day or so and compare it to the 709 TypeA LUT out of the camera .

I don't know if there are any issues created by calling the camera an F5 in the Odyssey menu structure. perhaps for recording ? Should be the same output right?

Anyway main thing I want is a monitor with an SLOg3 LUT that will go to a client monitor as well. User LUT's would be great also - so far that's the Odyssey. Great menu system also.

If you buy either the 7 or 7Q make sure you get an SSD or at least a Utility drive to install updates and authorization.

Thanks, that's somewhat reassuring.

And yep, If I buy one it will be the deal with the two SSD's.

Robert, no sweat. After decades in the business I have connections to many people in various ways.

An FS7 and an Odyssey7Q+ WITHOUT the extension back:
- 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 video over HDMI up to 24p, recorded in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
- UHD 10-bit 4:2:2 video over HDMI up to 30p, recorded in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
- HD 10-bit 4:2:2 video over HDMI or SDI up to 60p, recorded in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)

An FS7 and an Odyssey7Q+ WITH the extension back:
- The above listed formats as well as
- 4K RAW up to 60p
- 2K RAW up to 240p
- 4K RAW to 4K ProRes up to 30p
- 4K RAW to UHD ProRes up to 30p
- 4K RAW to 2K ProRes up to 60p
- 4K RAW to HD ProRes up to 60p

We believe highly in the quality of our RAW to video conversion quality.
There are some basic LUTs included currently (S-Log3). Coming soon will be S-Log2, S-Log3-Cinegamma3, plus custom 3D-LUTs.
...and more to come! ;-)

There are other reasons to get the extension back, like gunlock and timecode. Kinda tough to record professional double-system sound with a soundman without the extension back on the camera.

A serious revamping of the LUTs is underway, including the included LUTs. All being majorly upgraded.

Last person who said they tried this said all they can get is UHD, what be the story? Really would like to get 4k out without the back.

Well, I do it unprofessionally then, I use PluralEyes.;-) But then I don't have a soundman.

And Folks, please use a slate in any case.

My 7Q+ has shipped from the big store in NYC and should be here Friday. Are the SATA connectors standard so I can slap the drives in my OWC dock?

Thanks for the list. I hope to make a spreedsheet.

Y'all be cool,
Robert

I'm not sure if the FS7 has the true 4K output over HDMI enabled yet, but I do know it is part of the spec so if not it will be coming soon.

The SATA connection is standard although we have found some SATA adapters are not as good as others. Don't know about that one off the top of my head. Shoot a test and see if it works. We offer a basic one for $35 if it doesn't. Make sure you go USB 3 or Thunderbolt, otherwise you'll be downloading forever.
