Convergent Design NAB '15 Announcements

Interesting. I thought the "PRO" version would be one step ahead. Thanks for your answer !

Do they also have internal capacitors that permits to close them correctly in case of power outage ?
There's a great variety of requirements for what will and will not work in what we consider a reliable manner. Some SSDs use up to four times as much power as others. That can be a big deal, and it also means a lot of heat generated. Remember, we do not have the need for vents or fans. A 500G SSD in your laptop might take several hours of heavy tasking to fill, which in the Odyssey we can stuff it full of data in 10 minutes. Some drives just can't take that. Others might be fine the first few times, but after a few hundred times shoving data in & out at top speed the thing is just wrecked. To misquote Liam Neeson, SSDs for the Odyssey require "a very particular set of skills."

The Samsung 850 EVO 500G & 1000G are indeed equipped with Power Loss Protection circuitry.

Hey Mitch,
Looking over CD's roadmap for the next few releases, I don't see the upgrade to ProRes 4444 HQ, which, ostensibly, would give the O7Q the ability to record compressed RGB. Have I missed something, or is it truly not being implemented? I do see you refer to HFR Prores, but, i don't think that's RGB, is it?

Compressed 444 is still in the works, but we are not prepared to commit to a timetable. HFR of an established codec does not require re-certification by the owner of the codec, but a new variant of the codec does.

3D Luts... We convert our LUTs, copy them onto a SSD, then import them on the Odyssey, and the Odyssey can store 100's of them, correct? No need to be worried about reformatting the SSD after the LUTs are imported once? And we also can move LUTs to Folders, that we can add in the 7Q? Does the Odyssey transfer the folder structure from the Folders on the SSD to the unit itself? That'd be a useful feature, just to keep things organized.

NFS has documented it fairly well there:

thanx for the reply, Mitch.

You have it pretty well there. I believe you create the folder structure on the Odyssey itself but I have to check.

The 3D-LUT system in Odyssey is incredibly powerful. Once loaded into the Odyssey, there are separate routing controls to send it to the OLED, the Monitoring Tools (waveform, etc.), SDI A Out, SDI B Out, and HDMI Out. You could view a LUTted image on the OLED with the waveform showing the underlying source signal. You could send the same thing (LUTted image with un-LUTted waveform) out SDI A to a large monitor on set, an un-LUTted image to an engineer on SDI B, and a LUTted image with no waveform display to a client monitor via HDMI. That replaces a cart full of gear.

sounds great! The feature of carrying the folder structure from the SSD over to the Odyssey's System may be a feature to consider, though. Especially if using serveral luts for several different cameras.

Thanks Mitch for the videos at NAB and all this great updates, especially SSDs.
But why the access to the Samsung SSDs is only expected with the May update and not April ? Does it require so much engineering ?

Just a quick question.
Our FS700 is being upgraded by SONY as we speak. I just logged on to purchase the FS700 RAW option, but it looks like I can only buy the "RAW bundle" now.

The RAW Bundle is $200 more expensive than the FS700 option was.
Is there a way to purchase only the FS700 option? This is the only option we will ever need.

Thanks,

If it's the only option you will ever need you won't need rercording via HDMI either? Why not get a used 7Q including the RAW bundle? There should be some available. There should also be some with extended warranty on the market.

More than you might think.

We always need to identify the drives, and when recording to the Samsungs we need to do so in a slightly different way then when recording to our own. Not better/worse, just different. So we need to write some new code and then thoroughly test it in all configurations. Just crossing "t"s and dotting "i"s.

We currently only sell the Odyssey RAW Bundle.

I'm wondering the same. I was hoping the price would come down with increasing competition, but if you're an FS700 user with no plans of using the other options the price to get into the 7Q is $200 more expensive now :(

If it wasn't for the cost of the raw option I would have owned a 7Q by now, but as it is, it makes the whole package too expensive for me.

Don't be shortsighted by looking at the Odyssey7Q+ as an accessory to the FS7. It works with many cameras and will continue to as we expand its capabilities. Lenses can be expensive but will work for many years to come no matter what camera you use. A good tripod can last a generation. We are trying to make the Odyssey7Q+ a longterm gear investment. The cameras are increasingly replaceable, either every few years or job to job depending on the requirements of the shoot. With the Odyssey RAW Bundle, your monitor/recorder works with more RAW cameras than any device in the world.

The increased cost to move to the Odyssey RAW Bundle is more than made up for with our opening up to the use of Samsung 850 EVO SSDs. A 1000GB Samsung goes fr around $375 on Amazon, while our 1TB SSD is $1295 US list.

I know the 7Q/+ offers a lot. I guess I'm just bitter that the new pricing made it $200 more unlikely that I will ever be able to afford one :( And also puts it closer to the point where it makes more sense selling the FS700 and putting the money I would spend on a recorder towards an FS7.

Hi Mitch,

Are you able to reveal any information on the codes for the 3rd party SSDs? If I understood correctly you'll be selling the codes to make them work with the 7Q. If so, there a price range that CD has de decided on?
-Thanks in advance!

uhhh...is this a fact? That CD will CHARGE to be able to use the Samsung Evo SSD's? :embarasse
