"CONTRA" (subtitled festival version) shot with D90

I liked it. Pretty well done, but I want more! Did you really have to leave us hanging like that?

Very impressive, and great production value. Also the acting was great.

The light touch of film grain made me forget I was even watching a D90 film, and the colors were fantastic.

I remember being impressed when you posted the hotel scene, nice to finally see it in context.

Moin Ben - very suspenseful story. I´m waiting impatiently for the second part. I didn´t see any d90 stuff with so much effects so far - ae? Well done. Story, actors, locations, sound, camera work, look... all is utterly fantastic.

Tell us more about your hardware - only one D90?, steadycam?, audio?...
btw: why a password?

Guys, thanx so much!! I appreciate it!

@capice: Moin Capice :). Well, for the very last shot, just the 4 seconds where the guy burns up we used panasonics HVX because the green screen stuff is still pretty tough with the D90.

I used a FigRig in the Hotel room and a ABC Handyman Reporter at the lakeside (http://www.smehyl.com/Shop/images/ABC-Products_Reporter.jpeg)

I took the sound with 2 Sennheiser EW-100 G2 mics.

The lenses: just a Nikor 50mm 1,8 and the NIkon 18-55 3,4(?), well the one that comes with the cam...

Oh, and the explosion on the boat which i recorded in portugal was even done with a DV camera... ;)

I find it extremely cool, but the thing is that here in Hamburg it usually costs like 20 Euros a day to rent it and we shot CONTRA in 4 days, so at the moment i’m ok not owning it. But it was waaaay better than my FigRig (which i bought...)

Gutentag Ben,

Wie geht es? What kind of audio recorder did you use with those wireless mics? Mixer or..?

And how did you get the camera shake effect without extreme jello? I mean when you pan over the guy's face in the beginning and later on on the building...is this a post effect?

Hi Intern, for the audio I used a little thing called "H2" from Zoom. It works nice!

I don't really know which pan you mean? Can you tell the time? But if its a fast pan it’s definitely a time speed up afterwards in AE oder Premiere.

Oh, and the explosion on the boat which i recorded in portugal (...)
Funny, Hamburg is a second love (BTW I am also a proud Hamburg citizen too) and Portugal is my home country. I hope to shoot part of a feature in both places during this and next year.

Capice, the password is a fair way to protect a copyright content without being disregarded as it happens so often over these same boards. Moviemaking can be a hobby but should be seen as a business in certain cases as we all know.

Still waiting for our meeting next time in Hamburg,
E. :-)

PS: I haven't seen yet but I will download it -- there's a password anyway LOL ;-)

Amazing, congrats!

Thrilling story and great sound.
That´s suspense, man.

Did you remove artefacts in post, like stairstepremoval?

David

Very well made. Are the disintegration and the shot to the head Andrew Kramer tutorial procedures? And what do you mean by the D90 not handling well the key stuff? What problems did you have? What about motion tracking, did you have any particular issues?

Thanks, Amun, no I didn’t bother doing stairstepremoval. There’s no scene, where I really see the stairstepping.

Ciné-ernesto, YES — the king and god of us AE-users Andrew Kramer tought this! The man is a genius. I had no problems motion tracking, but the keying is a bit more difficult because of the high depth of field when using like a 50mm lens. It’s much easier using a professional tool like the HVX...

You forgot to mention Rome ;-)

...

We´ll have, at your shooting next year at the latest - a good meal in the portuguese quarter near the harbor and afterwards a coffee in a beach club? Or anything along those lines. Maybe Ben will come along too?

I saw it was AE now...just did some fast action with my Nikon today, it actually didn't show any jello, using a shoulder mount!

Wanted to say that the sound is awesome. Can't believe you got that from a Zoom H2. I thought adjusting levels etc. was too much of a pain on that thing...I guess the quality of the sound is really due to the sennheiser G2 mics? makes me want to get that setup, badly...

Shoulder mounts REALLY help with this camera. The very small shaky motions of pure hand-holding are the worst for the jello. Larger smooth motions are definitely better handled.

Yup, I agree. Even pulling the strap on neck trick is much more shaky than when using the simple $30 shoulder mount I picked up in china town.

Anyone else have experience with the Zoom H2 plus wireless lavs?
