Consumer cams that might be worth a damn

What if someone wants an AVCHD camcorder that records 24p, for cheap? The HMC40 is $2,000. The consumer TM300 is about $1,200, but it records 24p over 60i, not native. Enter the SD100, which records native 1080p24 video. It is out of production, giving way to the TM300, but can still be found in online stores. I got mine for just 1/5 of the price of the HMC40, and I think for this money it is a darn handsome machine.

Another consumer camcorder that records native 24p is the HDC-SD9, it is even older than the SD100. Also there is the Canon HV40, but it is tape-based, eww :-)

With the HV40 being native 24p I'm interested in seeing what the Canon HFS series will come out with in the near future. They just came out with the HFS11 and I was disappointed it didn't have native 24p. Hopefully the next Panasonic or Canon will. I'll look into the SD100 I wonder how it compares to the HV40?

The HFS100 is an amazing camera, and yes, you have to remove pulldown, but did a double take the other day after shooting with it for the first time in awhile after buying my GH1. These are SHARP little cameras, with tons of features!

Cranky, would you mind posting up a quick 60i--->60p--->24p slow motion test? I have an HMC and will be shooting some skiing this winter, but need another cam for in-air follow cams on ski jumps and stuff. If I could get by with a consumer camera, that'd be great.

Thanks man.

Hi Seven.b, sorry I don't have cool outdoorsy stuff, but here is a mix of 0.8x and 0.4x slowdown:

This is a slowdown to 0.8 speed (60i -> 30p -> 24p):

Oh, and this is native 24p, shot with the HDC-SD100:

Just read it they pretty much bashed the HV40. Maybe I'll wait till panasonic or canon comes out with a new one that shoots native 24p. It seems like there getting close to doing that.

This is another native 24p shot with the HDC-SD100 (I had posted it in the Fader ND thread, so you might have seen it).

No, they are getting farther. The previous SD100/HS100 did shoot native 24p. Its own predecessors, the SD9/HS9 did shoot native 24p. The current TM300/HS300 does not shoot native 24p, it shoots 24p-over-60i.

The attached image is taken from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luQubVABroQ&hd=1 Watch the video, it is pretty good. The same sensor/optics as on the HMC40.

It's all good. Hopefully this keeps going since the consumer camera market changes options every five minutes.

I am not sure what you are trying to say. Are you saying that it doesn't look impressive at all, or am I getting you wrong?
I mean what's the magic thing about having 24p at 1080 when you can tell by the image quality that it has been recorded with a cheap consumer camcorder?
Because my impression is that most of the folks going after 24p are looking for the film look kind of image.

pailes the only example that is on vimeo of native 24p footage of the sd100 is basically that video. No ones really put up a short or a trailer using the sd100. Cranky wants us to see an alternative to the HV40 which does the same thing but to tape.

No problem with that, but I've seen much higher quality videos from the HV20 and such. So I was wondering why I should go with 24p even if the image quality is rather mediocre. Just because of the price?

You might be right I've been reading a lot of reviews and they seem to say that the sd100 has okay video quality. Price in the states is around $750-850 so I know what you mean I could get a HV40 with that. Wish there was a comparison between the sd100 vs. HV40 comparing the native 24p modes. Oh well I'll probably wait to see if Canon and Panasonic release a native 24p AVCHD camera in the near future.
