Considering the new hpx250

So I thought I'd check with hpx370 users for some advice, since they are reported to have the same imager and codec. My specific question is if anyone has experience comparing the 370's 422AVC intra codec with the ex1 for image quality. Does the 1/2" sensor of the ex1 (with lower codec) beat out the 1/3" of the 370 (with better codec)? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
 
Depends on the comparison that is done as a codec will break up quicker the more post and processes it goes through, that is why higher bit rate codecs are better as they are more robust thru post and through transmission chains. As for chip size that is down to personal choice and you have to look at the overall system of the camera and what it is to be used for.

I chose P2 over SXS as I do a lot of broadcast work but i also needed a shoulder mount camera and two years ago sony did not have such a camera, the trade off from 1/2" to 1/3" chip size is not important to me but no doubt all the sony P2 bashers will now go on about how much more shallow depth of field you can get with a 1/2" camera but as I have said that is not as important to me than having camera system that does what I need to!

Also for me the HPX371 is BBC approved and to get that with a 1/2" sony camera you need to bolt on an external recorder.

Aside from the more technical advantages of the p2 codec of the 370, do you or anyone else have thoughts about comparing the image quality of the ex1 and the 370? Highly subjective, I know, but perhaps still helpful to hear about for people considering the new hpx250 vs the ex1. My hope is the 250/370 image quality is as good or better ... And then I can take advantage of the broadcast quality codec of the panasonic.
 
But if you really want a nice filming DOF image, you can easily attach a Redrock M3 to the front and use SLR lenses. Coupled with the high resolution and the awesome AVC-Intra codec on the 250, that would be a great image.
 
But the difference between a 1/3" and 1/2" chip is minimal in practical use, just keep it as wide open as possible and as said the HPX371 and 250 will be BBC approved, I have been a lifelong sony user in broadcast but the panasonic pictures look nicer to me and more natural. Most sony camera's do not have IR filters and that may be why some of the sony pictures can look too red to me.

I mainly work in broadcast so lots of shallow DOF is not really important to me most of the time.

Personally I chose the P2 system over the SXS as it gives me the same codecs and format on all my cameras from the HPX371 to the 3100 and 3700, the 251 will be an ideal add on as a B-camera or a smaller self shoot camera and it uses the same codec and P2 cards that I already have.
 
at a pricepoint of probably less than 6k, the 250 is a steal.
you get super sharp image, 10 bit 4:2:2 intra

EX1R has a higher pricepoint and yet lower specs in codec
 
Yes, September is not that far away, so hopefully this date holds true.

I am very curious to see how this new HPX camera compares to the Canon XF305.
 
p2 AVC I is unbreakable in my experience. the XF 305 is 50 mbs codec , right?

I think Panasonic has a no brainer with the HPX 250 as far as a small form factor camera for broadcast goes. The chip set is Full raster 1920x 1080 same as the HPX 370.
