Considering a canon 550D

I'm considering purchasing a Canon 550D to replace my current Panasonic Lumix G2, but the 550D doesn't have an articulated screen like the Lumix G2 does.

I was just wondering if this would be a silly purchase to make, even though the Canon 550D is superior in spec?

Opinions appreciated.

Honestly, and this is coming from a person who owns a 7D and a ton of Canon lenses. Until Canon rises up and releases a camera without Moire, I would go with the Panasonic GH2. I'm sure Canon will release some new bodies this year, hopefully with a sharper image and no moire. I've read rumors that a new Rebel might be released in April and 5D III mid year. But that's kind of a long wait if you really need the camera.

But until then, the GH2 is the better camera in almost every way, except the 2x crop and no fast, IS type native lenses.

I would pass Canon until they start competing again. The 60D IMO was a huge disappointment in that it was the 4th camera and it had the same problems, bad moire = un-useable 720 60p for any deep focus shots.

Personally, I'm giving Canon until April or so and if nothing comes out, Panny here I come especially with the Berger EOS adapter.

But what if I pass the Canon 60D financially and go for the Canon 550D anyway? Would that still be a silly purchase if I want to replace the Lumix G2?

The 550D is a great camera. I shot with it for 10 months and somebody offered to buy it for $600 last week. I sold it and got a 60D. Another great camera that I will also sell when Canon releases the next version. You can't go far wrong with any of these cameras. I'd look for a deal on a used 550D like the one I sold.
BTW my Sony EX3 is not immune to moire and aliasing either. I have problems with clothing tight weave fabrics all the time.

I completely agree with Gene. I am a big Canon fan but the GH2 is the cam to get. Its a real next gen dSLR with its features. 7D/60D/550D is first gen imo. The moire/aliasing is minimal on the GH2. There is still rolling shutter though.
I've had a 550D since April and its been really great. With the new hack, its kind of brought it back as a whole new cam. I would get the GH2 first. If its not a big deal financially, it wouldn't hurt getting a 550D used and hack it. It would be fun. Canon EF lenses work with an adaptor on the GH2. They are working on a 60D hack too.
