connecting an xlr mic to an xl1s...

It's not going to work. The XL1s doesn't provide phantom power and so the mic isn't going to be powered. You would need an external adapter like the MA100 that will actually provides 48v phantom power to the mic.

Any help on this issue? Does anyone know what the best solution is if your camera doesn't have phantom power built in?

ok I guess I'm buying the expensive thingy...
Hope I'm not too late but.... I use a Zoom H4N recorder to phantom power my MKH416 and I get a GREAT recorder in the bargain. You can pick them up for around $200 used these days
