Confused. Is it possible to record directly to laptop?

I have done this with the "tape" media setting, but it will not display on the pc with the "p2" media setting.

I have browsed the forums and reviews and see comments about not needing p2 cards, but using fs100 or directly to your laptop. Is that possible, directly to your laptop in high quality?

Thanks to anyone with an answer for my dumb questions.

I've used the Log and Capture function of FCP once before. It seemed to only accept one type of setting for capturing directly, though this was about the time that the HVX had just come out so this may have changed.

Otherwise, you can use Adobe OnLocation to capture directly to DVCPRO-HD which works well.

Also have a look at sofware from "BIG MUG SOFTWARE" they do a Capture software too. I use their Monitor Magic software which is pretty great for monitoring your camera.

Yes you can firewire capture directly into OnLocation, Avid, EDIUS, or Apple's editing program, all support firewire capture from DVCPRO-HD.

Just make sure you don't have the camera set in 720pN mode, as pN doesn't travel across the firewire.

what is the benefit to on location? a guy I work with wants to shoot with onlocation using a desktop pc. I told him it wouldn't be worth it cause we haven't used it yet and we would have to carry and hookup the pc everytime we switched locations

The benefit is having (relatively) unlimited capture space (going direct to disk), plus having a live monitor, live waveform, live vectorscope, audio monitoring, basically an entire "video village" all-in-one.

The drawback is having to be cabled to the camera.

The win is to bring some P2 cards for the shots where you can't be cabled, and for the long drawn-out scenes, plug in the firewire and use OnLocation. You can, of course, record simultaneously to P2 and also out the firewire to OnLocation.

Because of this thread I just opened On Location on my workstation. Hooked up a beer can Canon HV40 through firewire and recorded an AVCHC clip 1440x1080. I'm kinda curious but you can acually get DVCPRO-HD (100) through fire wire without dropping frames???? (say from a HVX170..)
My work station is a monster and I can't use it to move anywhere for this type usage but I do have a somewhat older laptop. How much of a killer machine do you have to have before it won't record with out dropping?

Of course. Been doing it for years.

Not that much; you need a decent throughput on the hard drive but a single-core CPU is enough to get the job done.

I'm currently using my macbook pro (2.53 Dual Core, 4GB RAM)...works perfectly. I have used an old, old G4 laptop with no problem!

I used OnLocation. It worked for me no problem, but I had to set the 5 second buffer to 1 second, because I was getting warnings about buffer and ram being low. Once I changed it to 1 second, the warnings stopped.

Hi everyone,

Another useful piece of software for recording via firewire is IStopMotion. You can record in all kinds of frame rates and resolutions, or one frame at a time for stop motion, or set it up to record timelaps at what ever rate you want. It's a pretty fun and useful tool to have on your computer.
