Confused - how can I measure if the hack took?

Hi,
My first post... so plz bear with me if my question is really stupid...
I have hacked my cam with the following settings

AVCHD
50000000 @ FDH/SH
32000000 @ H
22000000 @ L
Overall Bit Rate 52000000

Here is what Media Info and Final Cut say about the footy after log and transefer

media info file.jpg
Media info says
137mbps - shure thats not the case ... its a class 4 card! so no way thats right.

MBsec FCP.jpg

FCP says 16.6 Mbps - but it the hack set the compression at 32000000
The QT file is 113 mb and length is 6 which would be roughly 19 mbps -

So the question is What am I doing wrong? is the hack not working? (the camera confirms it is set at firm 0.0 which is clue that I at least hacked it ok ... and while we are at it - what is the meaning of life? and what is your favourite color!!?
Cheers and thanx for your help!

im sure you have hacked it properly, your programs aren't giving you true answers. I dont have a mac so i cant recommend a program. what does the media info on QT player say? transcoding to prores for fcp will always say 17Mb as thats what its usually transcoded at from what i understand.

if you want peak bitrates, download and film papasart's chart's of death off the monitor.

OK will DL the Chart of Death!! (scary! :P) and see what happens.

BTW you are partly right, FCP will bring everything at the quality set in the Preferences of the Log & Xnfer menu. If set to Apple Pro Res LT it will give about 17mb in the data rate. Switching to Apple Pro Res HQ will yield 26.7 mb in similar footy. I will keep trying to learn and post as I go and see if it helps anyone else.

ALSO NOTE: I am using a Class 4 Card PNY Optima -

hey El Boris the GH1 uses a variable codec so on low detailed scenes it uses a bitrate matching the scene, hacking the camera unlocks the high end bitrates to help with highly detailed scenes, fast movements and such.

at first i wondered why i wasn't seeing 50Mbps bitrates... then i realised what i was shooting only needed 20ish

i then went into the forrest to shoot extreme high detail to push the bitrates higher... 56Mbps, 48Mbps... then i realised what the hack was about.

now i can semi judge the detail of a scene by eye and kinda guess what bitrates i might expect to see when shooting it. (i need to get out more!)

Hey Terra1,
Thanx for the tip! I will be getting out more once I have a class 10 card! Do you use FCP to edit?

no probs El Boris i edit in ADOBE PREMIERE, i find the ADOBE SUITE way more advanced than FCP, i did use FCP but only very briefly so its probably better than i imagine... ADOBE's still better tho  (personal preference)

Im going to have to try Premiere - Im a long time FCP user and love the entire suite but this MTS transcoding stuff isn't too nice :(

i've got it easy as i'm a PAL user, i just drag and drop my MTS files in and away i go

GH1 wont read new firmware

GH1 wont read new firmware

I believe that I opened up th panasonic firmware with the ptool hack. I know I checked off all the boxes properly and saved the new new file on a formatted card as GH1__133.BIN. When I place the card in the GH1 and go to playback the camera doesn't go to any screens but instead tells me "no photos to display"... I don't understand what I did wrong. Advice would be appreciated

Sounds like your camera is not hackable.

So I too have hacked my GH1. After I installed the firmware with the 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch ( following all the instructions available ) it say "Firmware 0.0". But the videos produced by the GH1 are of very poor image quality. I´ve tried FHD & SH Mode. The files are also rather small compared to the files, produced by my Canon T2i ( 550D ) - nearly 3 times the size of the GH1 file. I filmed the same situation ( including panning ) twice : with the GH1 and the T2i. The GH1 footage looks quite smeary and blurry compared to the T2i footage.

So I suppose, the hack did not work and the GH1 is still working in it´s "normal way". But how is this possible ? What did I do wrong and why isn´t there a safe way to be absolutely sure if the hack works or not ?
