Conforming Footage

Hi, I'm new to the HVX Variable Frame Rates.

I'm looking to shoot with the best filmic motion for finishing on standard def DVD.

I'm using the FS-100 v3 - Is shooting 720/24P on the HVX and QT PN on the FS-100 my best option? Is there a difference between QT PN and P2 PN other than saving a step?

I've also heard that shooting 720/60P at 24fps can give you a very 'film transferred to video look' Would this be a better option?

If I am not shooting QT PN, just regular QT (for over/under and regular fps), when I bring my clips into FCP they all have a frame rate of 59.94, what is the best way to conform these clips to the actual frame rate I shot them in? I watched Ben's tutorial and he has an option under Tools/DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter. I'm using the lastest FCP v5.1.4 and I don't have this option. I have 'Import Panasonic P2' but no frame rate converter under tools?! How do I go about conforming this footage? I'm going to get the DVD or book, but the only problem is I have to shoot tomorrow. Help!

Thanks
Justin

24p720 with a shallow DOF, and some tweaking of a scene setting works well for me.

The 24pn option in FS-100 is the functional equivalent of pnative in the cam.

Focus officially states that as of this time the Native modes on the FS-100 do NOT support VFR metadata.

FRC in FCP has to be installed, it's not there automatically. Copy it from the Extras folder off the FCP installation DVD to your FCP plug ins folder on your system drive.

Thanks for the replies, I got it to work! Damn that 60fps slo mo looks good.

Does anyone know if the FS-100 24PN is EXACTLY the same process as the HVX 24PN or is it just mimmicking it?

I don't have any P2 cards to compare, but to me (maybe it's just me) the 24PN motion from the FS-100 v3 looks a little strobic and unnatural. Too strobic for film.

Is there a better way to get a more film-like motion?

FS-100 Native mode is EXACTLY the same as it is in the HVX. Same metadata, same frames being recorded, etc. It just doesn't do VFR at this time. That is taking more engineering work on Focus's part to iron out. Has to do with flaging frames via the Firewire port. Panny aparantly hasn't made working with FW data out of the camara very easy to do. Why? It's a tapless camera, you'd think the FW port would be of major concern in designing a tapless camera.

The 24pN on the FS-100 gives you the EXACT same thing the HVX writes to P2 cards. If it looks to strobic and unnatural, you're not planning your movements properly. You can't do movement in 24p like you can in 60i. Barry's HVX and DVX books explain this very well.

To get more film-like motion, you have to shoot as if you have film. Which is WAY different than shooting 60i video...

Hi Ben, thanks so much for your replies. Upon further review after rendering it out to Standard Def DVD the 24PN footage looks pretty awesome. I was just running some motion tests without lighting and moving the camera around like a madman, that's probably why the motion looks so jittery.

Any place to purchase a digital version of the book??

Barry's book? No. Just buy it, it's so worth the cost. He put TONS of time and expense into it.
