Confirmed: XL2 has a 12-bit DSP
Just received this via email from Canon USA:

Since the press release concerning the XL2, we have had many
inquiries as to the bit depth of its Digital Signal Processor (DSP).
The bit depth of a DSP is important because, as the number of
bits increases, the number of gradations processed and,
therefore, the quality of the image, increases. As a comparison,
8-bit processors use 256 gradations, while 12-bit processors use
4,096 gradations.

The XL2 has a 12-bit DSP, customized by Canon exclusively for
use in the XL2.

Actually that doesn't settle it.  I still want to fight... just kidding. ;D  But truthfully this just goes to show all the canon enthusiests that 12 bit DSP does make a difference, and that the XL2 would not be "just as good" without it.  While on the other hand, Panasonic enthusiasts such as myself now have less cannon fodder (no pun intended) against the XL2.  I guess it's just down to chip size.  how much is that XL2 again? :)  maybe i should take another look in the couch coushins for a little extra cash. :)
