Computer Hangs When Copying P2 Card

Hi, All

I have a PC (Fujitsu Lifebook N6470 running Vista Home Premium) with an internal PCMCIA slot that I use for dumping footage from my 16GB P2 cards. Often, the copy process hangs up the computer when copying and I have to do a hard boot to get it going again. It can take several tries to get the footage over. This happens both when copying to the internal HD and also to an external G-Raid HD w/ Firewire. Other times it copies just fine.

Has anyone else had this happen? Any solution or suggestions?

Thanks!

Dan

I am using the internal PCMCIA card slot and using windows explorer to drag and drop the files onto the internal hard drive.

From what I see online, that computer has a 4200 rpm internal drive. That's slower than would make me comfortable.

You might try a faster external hard drive and see if the problem persists.

Apart from that, the best way to transfer footage is through P2 Viewer or other specific P2 transfer software.

Check the Windows Event viewer for errors. You prob. have some resets or I/O errors.

Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc

Or right click My Computer -> Manage -> Even Log -> System.

Post any red or yellow errors you've got here. 4200rpm (Sorry David) drive would have nothing to do with this, unless that drive is just broken and is throwing SATA/ATA reset errors.

If you do not find any errors. Then I'd suggest.

A) Run a memtestX86 on you machine for 5 cycles and see if it overheats or throws ram errors.
B) Check the HDD with the Manufacturers tools Seagate Sea Tools, Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (unless the laptop HDD portable drive is Toshiba).

Also if you have active AntiVirus protection software running, I'd disable it during the P2 card copy, as it tends to read and inspect all data coming to and from all the HDD's.

Even Viewer looks like this:

Remember, intermittent crashing cannot be solved unless you can accurately reproduce the problem, identify a single issue that causes that problem, eliminate the issue, then attempt to reproduce the problem again and not have it show up.
If you tweak 20 different things and it goes away, you won't know which one did it an when it comes back you wont know why.
