Compressor Reverse Telecine Options

When reverse telecine through compressor it seems like it can locate breaks in the cadence pattern between edits. Does this mean I can edit my entire project in Final Cut in HDV 60i 29.97 and then just remove the pulldown from my final project and not all the original footage.

If I was doing something feature length with my HV20 perhaps it would be ideal to have a 29.97 version before I make a true 24p version, and therefore keep all the footage in 29.97 and only output the end product through a reverse telecine.

Any thoughts?

Anyone ever have a case where compressor messed up a reverse telecine where the cadence changes a lot throughout the clips?

no. one of two things will happen. a one frame gap will be created at some of the edit points if you submit it to compressor as a sequence. if you export it as one file, then the first frame of most shots (at each edit point) will be a frame created from a single field, losing half the resolution.

either convert all your footage before cutting or submit it as a sequence and then go thru and close all the 1 frame gaps.

I've had errors with the Compressor method before - weird one-frame interlace glitches appearing several seconds into an otherwise progressive clip and the like. There seems to be no real way to detect when this has happened, other than noticing it in your NLE timeline.

For this reason, I've switched to using JES Deinterlacer to do my pulldown removal, but I hope the Compressor issues will be sorted out, as it's a much more elegant workflow (droplets, better batch handling, faster).

gracias senor.

I guess it is no big deal if you simply have the footage replace the source files which I just tried.

I will not be going with JES, but thanks for the warning I will keep my eyes peeled.
