Compressor Plug in for dialogue

Hi, everyone – I'm not a huge fan of the compressor in Final Cut... does anyone have a recommendation for a nice, natural compressor plugin for FCPX / Audition / etc?

Thanks so much!

I agree I used the compressor in FCP for the first time last week and ended up taking it off again. I normally dub with pro tools but it would be handy to have a decent one available for FCP.

I suspect any plug in that can be AU will work and if I find one later I will let you know.

It sort of depends on what you're doing. For raising the overall level without clipping peaks, I like the adaptive limiter better than the compressor.

I like the Waves' C1 and RComp. Sometimes I feel that the RComp is a bit more transparent than the C1. I try not to put compressors on individual DX tracks. I rely more on fader movements. I've learned this the hard way as some of my earlier mixes sounded squashed and very unnatural as if there was no life to them. Tons and tons of automation is key I think. If I do have a compressor on a dialogue track, it's bypassed until needed. When it's active, I have a low ratio setting and the signal is probably tickling the threshold. Remember that compressors raise the noise floor, and if you have a high noise floor to start with, why raise it even more? If there's a dynamics processor on my DX tracks, it's an expander to put the noise floor lower and lower..

I have all the waves plug ins for my pro tools set-up but have never been able to get any of them to work in FCP, any hints and tips.

P.S I don't use soundtrack pro but if the plug ins could work direct in FCP that would be great to know.

I also have lots of Waves plug-ins for ProTools, and though they load with FCP they never work there. They have no graphic interface, so no meters... only the typical FCP sliders and text (number) boxes for adjustment. They also tend to crash FCP.

I don't know if this is any different for FCPX, however. Apple incorporated a lot of STP's functionality into FCPX, so the plug-ins may behave differently there. Since I haven't "upgraded", I don't know.
