Compression problems with 550D @ 720P 50fps

Hello all,

I'm new here and have just entered the world of DSLRs this week with the purchase of a 550D. I took the 550D out and filmed some deer yesterday with a 100-400 Canon L lens and the 1080 25p stuff looked good. I couldn't see any aliasing/moire or general compression issues. However, when I switched the camera into 720 50p mode I started to notice lots of horrible compression, particularly on the deer's coats and also a rippling compression effect when panning across walls. As a result, I've practically discounted the use of 50p and would rather see what results I can get with Twixtor. I'm intrigued to know if anyone else has had any success with the 720P 50p or possibly 60p (as I assume the compression works in much the same way) in terms of compression. For example, do the Magic Lantern higher bitrates have any effect at countering this problem? I'm guessing that the answer is probably 'no' but would be very interested to hear of anyone who has had some success.

Many thanks,

Pete

Until now the best way to compensate the moire in 720p mode for me is just overlay a diffusion effect in post.
But I also gotta try to pull up the bitrate with MagicLantern..
