COMPLETED - WORST CASE SENARIO, Avatuar

i thaught the pictures were great...kinda. I really liked the composition, lighting and colors. I wasnt, however, a huge fan of the hand held and shaky jib moves but i can understand filming in a pinch. The story was a little hard to follow but was entertained.
Thanx for sharing

Most audiences don't get the chance at the cinema to 'Watch it again'

The Awful Truth

The Awful Truth

The Awful Truth

The Good:
1. Great camerawork/lighting in the vast majority of scenes.
2. Damn good editing, tight and interesting cuts. Must have had good footage to work with, see #1.
3. Great color.
4. You used a Magic Bullet Filter, but you tweaked it or used it sparingly, bonus!
5. Cool writing/editing choice of bum asking for change. (00:01:30)
6. Pretty actors (except for the guys). Leading lady is way cute! (00:01:01)
7. Interesting story, comedic and cute at first, AT FIRST.
8. Good sound design/foley throughout the film.
9. Dare I say.. good acting from the actors. This excludes the friends/relatives posing as actors. I've detailed their performances in the section below.
10. The dialog was pretty good, more of it was believeable than unbelieveable.

The Bad:
1. Slow, unnecessary crane/stedicam tracking shot. (00:00:39)
2. Boss "actor" must never attempt acting again. (00:01:07)
3. Bum "actor" has apparently never encounted a real bum. Come to LA/SF, home of the evolved Superbum. (although the scenery looks hauntingly familiar of LA/SF). (00:01:40)
4. Music level gets too loud at times. (00:03:53)
5. The writing was good except for the story. Only kidding, but the story went nowhere at warp 11. Just when I thought it might be about something, it goes to a full minute of credits. I'm waiting for the sequel to answer such questions as: How will their date go? Does he have protection? What's that silly bum doing now!?

& The Ugly:
1. Lame reference to TPS report.
2. Almost nudity, but then not. Again check out (00:01:01)
3. Highly saturated red on DV (didn't appear in the film, this is just a general tip).
4. No gore.
5. No karate.

Summary:
The little engine that coundn't. I was truly interested and then BAM it's over! Visually it's very nice, great camerawork, good choices. It's a pretty good watch to see what you can do on a nice sunny day with some decent actors, a little equipment, and a broken script. Nontheless, I'm giving this thumbs up since it has more goods than bads. It was an enjoyable watch and overall it had a high production value considering it was shot over a couple of weekends.

Statistics:
This film has a total running time of about 4:58.
Of that total running time, about 1:00 minute is credits, intros, and/or company logos.
The director's name appears 2 times throughout the film.
The film version viewed was a Quicktime file with a file size of 34mb.

DISCLAIMER
The Awful Truth is me being completely honest about what I think is good, bad, and just plain ugly (ugly items are merely items of which I poke fun). Please know that I point out these things to help you see what others might see. In other words, take it with a grain of salt, it's your film. I mean no offense by my random musings, nor will I defend my opinions because I could most certainly be wrong. However, I have experience in things such as this, so I'm entitled to have said opinion. This method of critique was born out of necessity. For years people were so constructively un-honest with me (i.e. not giving me The Awful Truth), that I couldn't seem to learn how to do things better. I grant the gift of one man's truth to you. Reader beware, for The Awful Truth will be told again.

Amanda was hot, like dude so hot, and like if you want people to comment on the acting then like you have to have ugly chix in your flix cause it seemed like the intended audience was straight men and lesbians cause every time she left the screen I was just waiting for her to come back. Loved it when she leaned over, did you do that on purpose you sly dog???? hehehehehe... it was cool, I know we all know about those novices who pay you pizza and want you to devote your life to their projects. You did well under the circumstances. peeeeeeaaaaaaacceeeee, but your outro was longer...

Haha thanks for all the great comments guys! cshelton... that was an unbelivable review! Gotta have you look at more of my stuff!
I appologize, pipe, that you didn't get it. I showed this to a bunch of friends last night and after the first two dream sequences a girl blurted out "Oh! He's imagining all the worst case things that could happen." It was kind of the effect that was desired, although I have stated I know it's a little rough, but I did what I could given the story and footage given. Everyone seems to like my amanda lol she'll probably be in some more of my stuff comn' up:) Thanks again guys! You make it worth while!

Well done; here's my take

1. The acting isn't horrible but is rough; the talent either needs some polishing or some serious rehearsal time; again; not the worst I have seen but distracting at times.

2. The Levels on this short are all over the place; check this on a waveform. It's as if the blacks goes from 15 IRE to 0 IRE to 7.5 IRE and back; as if a piece of bridal veil has been placed over the image. I'd consider getting the blacks under wraps by dropping the levels.

3. I got was was going on but think this short could have had a little more planning storywise. Perhaps establishing the 'connection' or 'relationship' of the couple instead of walking out of the Cafe and then going onto the "Worst Case Scenario' imaginings.

4. You have some really nice comps and the editing is tight and a nice choice of location as well; where is this?

That's my .02. I did enjoy this though and look forward to more work; you gotta little filmmaker up in you and I imagine it only gets better from here. Your talent is obvious. Keep it up! And yeah, the chick was hot. In fact, both actors looked like 'actors'. Just polish them up a bit more next time.

Thanks for showing us this.

My opinion is that the short was nice, with the basics done right, and without any kind of really interesting or exceptional elements. It was solid, but unseasoned. you gave us he bread, it was a good bread, but no butter, cream cheese or ham (I happen to like ham).

That is somehow good too, because it isn't pretentious.

I don't like the editing at all. I don't like the cuts, I don't like the rythm, but I think you are getting somewhere (I don't think it's crap). The first estabilishing shot is way too short and pointless, I see you want to get fancy with some crane moves, but either they are done right or they don't work. The crane move in the park bench also bothered me. Pointless, you don't change the perspective and you don't say anything with that. It's not justa question of moving the camera, is changing the framing and telling the story. They did neither.

Some actors needed direction, the tone was different to each one of them.

It's a good practice short, and it's reasonably well done and good looking, but undeneath it it had very little. That's my take on it, I'm sure you can pull a much better job in a project you really get involved with.

Cheers!

Intersting andhonestpoints; something about the comments on the crane; I'll keep that in my mind for my next project as well; thanks for the tip.

the crane is a POS! the only reason I used it in the park was to establish him coming to the park and sitting down we didn't get that shot the previous saturday and the white shirt you see him wearing in the film was stolen!!! AHHH!!! so simple solution wear a a jacket with a similar white shirt underneath take it off and tada were in the park lol I was really rushed :(
Im giving the crane to my construction buddy see if he can't make it work! Taubkin as far as editing any pointers on how and when to cut? I am new to this.

something about the comments on the crane

Yes, that's a good comment. There should be some motivation for a camera move. For example, you are following an actor or a moving object. Otherwise, it turns into a gee whiz look I can move the camera shot. Spielberg (ack, I used the name) was a big influence on the moving shot. But, you will note that the movement was in response to something occurring on screen.

I think your short has a lot of well done shots and edits. I recognize the difficulty in what you did and commend what you accomplished.

OMG. Am I the only one who noticed the song at the credits. **cough Rich Lee cough** lol

I thought it was a cool short avatuar, especially for your time restrictions. Mad props buddy!

Hot gurl! Cool flick!

One thing though, out of all the songs in all the world, why did you choose to rip off the song from Rich Lee's music video during your creds? And I say "rip off" in the nicest way possible because you didn't even thank them in your credits for letting you use their song. If they even did let you.

Good job on the rest of the film though.

lol they didn't and I don't intend on using this for anything other then showing you guys if I did use it for anything else I would definitly get permiso :) so I feel like it wasn't doing anything other then saying without saying I liked your music enough to use in my vid:)

Take it easy ProjX

Rich Directed the Video; he's not the BAND. I think it's great Avatuar payed a little homage to a fellow DVX'er and surely knows better than to submit it anywhere that requires RIGHTS.

Yeh I noticed Rich's Buckfast video song in the credits. What's up with that?

hey man, wut the **** are you doin putting that song in there with out permission?! wtf is wrong with you?! jeeessuss..the nerve man...fo-reals...HAHAHAHA...just kiddin.

hey man, congrats on finishing it. it looks good. i think there needs to be some color correction to make the image pop a bit more. i think the acting is ok. not great..could be better. for the most part your shot choises were good. the sound track, except for the last song kinda reminded me a dukes of hazzard score...a little too barnyard...or something. i duuno.

i think this was probably a great learning experience for you. its really great that you did this man, and its a great first effort. keep doing it. and definitly listen to what others have to say, some of it might be bad but thats how you grow. take what you like from the comments and leave the rest.

fyi, if you do end up submiting this to a festival or doing more with it or whatever, you should definitly contact the band, and let them agree to letting you use it. im sure with some presuasion (like giving them the number of the girl in the short  ) they might work something out.

i feel especially since they are indie, they deserve a bit of respect when it come to using their music.

anyway, sorry for the not so in depth review..but i gotta get back to work. peace dude, and keep making stuff!

later

thank you Rich sir, Those are some really motivating words! Makes me feel like makin' another:) As for the music, I have to get permission for all those tracks and give credit where credit is due if I plan on using this for anything. I wouldn't ever try to jip anyone!!! Bad karma ;)
