Comparison footage of four cams

to get professional "variable framerates" you start with Varicam and finish with Arri D20. HVX200 needs advertising that's the reason that you get leftovers of "variable framerates". All you can get also with other low HD cams in post. Everything is about the money, if I would like to spent 10 000 to 15 000 €/$ for the cam than I will go in the next class of 2/3" inch cams like AJ-HDX400. I was in Panasonic presentation of HVX200/AJ-HDX400 last week here in Vienna and saw a great Panasonic AJ-HDX400 cam. HVX200 looks like a toy. You should not spent more than 5000 €/$. Better to invest in accessories like matte boxes, 35mm adapters, Nikon manual lenses, separate audio recording, lighting equipment etc...Don't forget that are all 1/3" cams and all limitation of that, fast movement, less sensitivity, a low dynamic range od CCDs etc...

This is pure silliness. The HDX400 has a list price of $42,500. The HVX, $5,999. What are you talking about?

Sorry, but you don't get the point. Actually Panasonic with HVX200 use the same chip as DVX100. That is a reason of HIDDING the CCDs size info. The camera body is new, also Leica lens and software that gives you all these "beauties" with frame rates, gamma, IT data on P2, etc. But the "weak" point of this concept is the bundle "HVX200+2P2 8GB cards" that for sales is very expensive. Probably Panasonic "re-calculated" that the loyal DVX consumers would "slash" the prices of P2 card but I am not so sure. Maybe iPod offload option could help to HVX200 but not to P2. Again consumers have to pay for the new technology. But professionals should dot for them. And now at the end of the game is a same old story. The price shows quality. Canon XL H1 is a winner in a picture quality, HVX is 4:2:2 a color sampling Queen, JVC GY HD100 is an indie filmmaker "Lost in Translation" workflow and Sony Z1/FX1 is a consumer dream, a bit lower picture quality but cheap and usable if you know to fix it in postproduction.

The best is to have all of them. But than for that money you could buy AJ-HDX400 as you quote the price. Indie life is not so easy.

SJUSER,
You have NO idea what you're talking about.
The HVX200 has 16:9 CCDs, the DVX100 does NOT !

I've been following your post here and it's always been negative about the HVX200.
I'm not sure the reason you're trollling here, with false "made up" info.

Also, please NO more comparisons to cameras that cost 5 TIMES! the price of the HVX200.

It all depends on the editing workflow as well. Some are set-up right now to read P2. My hang-up with anything beyond DV was the cost of the decks. Needing a $15,000-$20,000 tape deck to digitize footage is crazy. I think many of my clients who already use FCP will think getting a hard-drive full of footage almost ready to edit would be fantastic. For years my clients complained of the logging/digitizing bottleneck. I would get hours & hours of Beta tapes to log and then digitize. I have spent countless hours with tapes that had broken TC, no pre-roll, 2 camera shoots where the TC was hopelessly out of sync. Getting away from tape will seem strange at first but I will be right there to get on with it.

But we already started to celebrate a New Year here in Vienna. "Innere Stadt" is full of a music theater stages. Everyone here has some alcohol in a blood. So calm down. I am not against HVX, I am a critic and trying to help the consumer. By the way I do have plan to get HVX this year too.

Happy New Year.

Sanjin, you really have to be clearer in your statements. This is purely speculation.

Will the canon have more resolution than the HVX? Yes, maybe it does. However, it has less lattitude so captures 'less' information and it has motion artifacts from HDV compression - oh and less colour information... All of these factors go towards image 'quality'. Saying the Canon is a winner in picture quality is very subjective. More resoltuion maybe, better picture quality? probably not.

If a camera had a 3Mpixel sensor but it could only shoot 2 stops of lattitue and recorded to cinepak codec, would you say that was a winner in picture quality too?

And you keep posting about how many people have viewed this thread!*! is this a populatiry contest? As far as I know Jarred does not have a T-shirt for the 'most viewed post of the year'.

Please keep the scientific tests coming, but dont sprinkle them with things like 'the HVX uses DVX chipset' etc. Its just touting false information as fact.

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum, so appologies for butting-in and potentially re-asking questions that have probably been sufficiently answered.

Anyhow, I've been dying to start shooting my own video/hd projects, and am looking towards a purchase of the HVX200. However I have recently purchased an Apple 20inch iMac G5 (iMovieHD)
Question 1: Is this computer powerfull enough to handle capturing and editing HD ( I will not initially be using it for proffessional aplications, and do not mind waiting!)
Question 2: Can I just use the camera and Firewire cable to download DV and or HD straight to my computer, or will I need expensive P2 Stores or Drives.
Question 3 : Is iMovie HD an apprpriate application for editing. (Bearing in mind I do not rate flashy-editing effects, and the majority of cuts will take place in-camera)

An answer to these fundamental querries would be greatly appreciated.

Much respect,
jasond

jasond - Question 2 - You will need to have a software program that can stream the dv footage directly to your harddrive. If not, then yes, you will need a P2 card to record HD (or Firestore type device)

Hi baquajim,
With regards to question 2, would Final Cut Pro be an example of software that could be utilised to stream the dv footage directly to the harddrive?

Cheers
jasond

Sanjin, this is ridiculous, and a lie. You've been kicked off of other forums for this kind of nonsense. This will serve as your only warning -- do not go spreading blatant lies about any of the manufacturer's products or you will find yourself banned.

Maybe. Have to do some side-by-sides to be sure. But one thing we can definitely be sure of is that the HVX will have 89% more color resolution than the Canon does.

NICE! My first post this year!

Anyway SJUser is this suppose to be a joke, I downloaded the footaged you posted up on your site and there's only the HVX and JVC footage.

Why not the rest and the footage as listed. Also the footage that I have doesn't play all the way?
