I am looking to buy a compact camera with HD video and have been looking at the GH2 for sometime being that I have worked with Panasonic video cameras (HMC-150 and HMC-40), but the new Nikon 1 V1 has caught my attention. I am familiar with each camera's tech specs but looking for real world views on these cameras primarily as a compact video camera with 10MP+ stills.

One thing to consider are the lenses. Nikon can only use Nikkor lenses and lenses with Nikon or other compatible mount. That will exclude many great and sometimes low cost lenses that GH2 can easily use, adapted or not.

The Nikon 1 system is interesting given it's similarity to super 16mm from a sensor size perspective.

The V1 bit rate is only 24 mbps so a hacked GH2 would most likely be a superior video camera.
The also V1 doesn't do 24/25p, as far as I know it's only capable of 30p.

Given the major crop factor of the V1 it'll be even tougher to get a suitable wide angle lens than it is with the GH2.
For the time being in that area you're pretty much limited to the 10mm f/2.8 lens.

The Nikon V1 is part of the Nikon 1 system, which does not use the F mount, so this is not true. The Nikon 1 system lens mount has a shallow flange depth, so many other lens mounts may be utilized via (yet to be release but coming soon) adapters, just like micro 4/3 camera like the GH2.
